NFL Draft 2011: Kansas City Chiefs Pick Boom or Bust Receiver Jon Baldwin

Brian ShannonApr 28, 2011

The Kansas City Chiefs first made an excellent move by swinging a trade with the Cleveland Browns to move down from the 21st pick in the draft to the 27th pick while adding a third-round pick in the process.

The Chiefs were then able to move up to the 26th pick when the Baltimore Ravens failed to make their pick in time, allowing Kansas City to make its selection and take Pittsburgh wide receiver Jon Baldwin.

Baldwin has the potential to be a superstar receiver in the NFL with his 6'4" frame and 42" vertical jump, but he also has the potential to be a bust with his reported negative attitude.

Most scouting reports on Baldwin mention that he was a headache for the Pitt coaching staff and was not the greatest teammate.

His apparent negative attitude is what makes this pick somewhat of a surprise. Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli typically doesn't like to take on players with negative attitudes, and after drafting many college team captains last year, the Chiefs did the exact opposite with their first-round selection this year.

There is no doubt that Baldwin has the physical skill to be a very good receiver in the NFL, but his success may ultimately come down to his attitude as a pro.

Baldwin should take a lot of pressure off Chiefs Pro Bowl receiver Dwayne Bowe, and he fills the team's biggest need of a No. 2 receiver. Some believed that Baldwin was going to go in the latter part of the second round or potentially the third round, but obviously the Chiefs felt differently and jumped on the big receiver when they were on the clock once again.

The Chiefs need to be productive on day two, and they should be now that they have three picks total in Rounds 2 and 3. Outside linebacker and the offensive line should be the priorities.

But for now Chiefs fans can hope that Baldwin has his head on straight when he gets to Arrowhead and that he will be Pioli's new Randy Moss.
