New York Mets Still Paying Bret Saberhagen

Adam BernacchioApr 28, 2011

It’s absolutely crazy the information that sometimes is passed on Twitter. If you use Twitter correctly, and not just to find out that Ashton Kutcher took at heater at 1:00, then it’s a valuable source of quality information.

One of the Tweets that Darren Rovell of CNBC’s Sports Business Journal passed along via Daniel Roberts of Fortune Magazine was that the New York Mets are still paying former pitcher Bret Saberhagen $250,000 a year through 2029 in deferred money.

That’s the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

According to Baseball-Reference, Saberhagen played four years in New York and made an average of $4 million per season. Saberhagen only started 74 games with the Mets and had a 3.16 ERA and was worth a little over 11 wins in his four disappointing seasons in Flushing.

From January 1, 2011 to the end of 2029, the two-time AL Cy Young award winner with the Kansas City Royals will collect $4.5 million from the Mets. Not a bad deal.

Saberhagen is currently the coach of the Calabasas Varsity baseball team in Calabasas, CA. He also has a home in Babylon, NY.
