NFL Draft 2011: Report Says Colorado's Jimmy Smith Failed Three Drug Tests

Matt MillerApr 28, 2011

While the NFL draft world is waking up this morning to our national holiday, reports are coming in that a potential top-15 pick has failed three drug tests and admitted to a codeine addiction.

And it wasn't Ryan Mallett.

Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel passes on a report this morning that Smith flunked three drug tests at Colorado and told at least one NFL team that one was for misusing codeine.

Smith's no stranger to character concerns.

During his time at Colorado he was arrested for assault, was twice arrested for minor in possession charges and skipped the 2010 Senior Bowl.

There is no doubting that Jimmy Smith is one of the most talented players in this draft class. Were it not for the off-field issues and attitude problems he would likely be the second or third cornerback drafted tonight.

With McGinn's report compounding the already red-flagged report on Smith, it's almost a sure thing that he will fall out of the first round of the draft, if not the first three rounds.

There is an off chance Smith won't be drafted at all.

NFL teams take character concerns seriously, but they also place a huge premium on cornerbacks who are 6'2" and can run a 4.42 in the 40-yard dash.

Smith is simply too talented to pass on. While he ranked as a late first-round selection before today's report, we find it unlikely he falls past Round 5.
