Glasgow Celtic Win League and Cup Double After Youth Cup Victory over Rangers

Marc RosebladeApr 27, 2011

The goal scoring was nearly opened in the 59th minute with a Rangers own goal when a freak clearance drifted agonising toward the young defender Hunter's goal but and happily for him his keeper Inglis was alert to the ball and managed to correct his footing to stop the ball hitting the back of the net.

A few minutes later, one of the Czech twins, Patrik Twardzik, crashed his 30 yard stunning effort of the cross bar with striker Greg Spence unable to control the rebound to any effect and the chance was gone.

Celtic were really pressuring the Rangers defence and it was just a matter of time before they managed to open the scoring and they did so through top scorer Spence in the 71st minute.

A cannonball strike from about eight yards out found its way past the out stretched hands of the diving Rangers keeper and into the top corner of the net giving a lead that the Parkhead side deserved and it looked like they would go from strength to strength from that moment.

However this seemed to galvanise the Gers but after numerous attempts to break the Celtic defence down, they still found themselves wanting in front of goal until that was, the third minute from time when Ryan McCabe superbly met a crossed ball, heading home a unstoppable bullet much to the delight of the blue nose support right in front of him.

It was a devastating blow to Celtic who had been playing down the clock up until that moment but they had to accept that the game would move into extra time.

The SPL under 19's champions are champions for a reason and as they hunted for back to back cup titles, they found it difficult to get the ball past the young Rangers keeper Inglis.

10 minutes into the first extra time period, they thought it was over from a 18 yard shot that was goal bound the moment it left the striker's boot but they hadn't banked on the superb goalkeeping efforts of the Rangers stopper when he made a tremendous save to keep his side in the match.

But eventually Celtic's pressure was to tell with only nine minutes remaining. A Gormley strike from 18 yards out that made its way into the top right hand corner of the goal and even the impressive Inglis, despite his best outstretched diving efforts, couldn't stop the strike.

Rangers to their credit kept on plugging away and thought they had snatched an equalizer in the last minute when the ball hit the back of the net but the farside assistant referee already had his flag up for offside, much to the relief of the Celtic players.
