WWE Extreme Rules Preview: 15 Burning Questions Fans Want Answered

Drake OzApr 26, 2011

Although you might not know it from last night's episode of Raw, there is actually a WWE pay-per-view this Sunday: WWE Extreme Rules.

While the WWE draft (and the ridiculous double drafting of John Cena) took top priority this Monday, we're only five days away from the stipulation-filled show that should feature some quality action, if WWE officials give the matches enough time.

And especially now that top names like Alberto Del Rio, Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio have switched brands, we can expect to see the blowoff in matches to feuds that have extended over the past several months.

But there are still plenty of questions heading into Extreme Rules; like these 15 burning ones that WWE fans across the country will be asking themselves heading into Sunday's pay-per-view.

15. Which Match Will Open the Show?

1 of 15

In my humble opinion, there are two choices for which match will open Extreme Rules: Randy Orton vs. CM Punk and Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes.

This is purely a guess on my part, but I'm going with Rhodes-Mysterio as the show opener. This should be a fast-paced, entertaining bout, and that's what WWE officials look for from the first match on the card.

Orton's pacing in the ring is too slow and methodical for this slot, so let's see if Mysterio and Rhodes can get the crowd fired up for the rest of the night.

14. Will There Be Any More Matches Added to the Show?

2 of 15

As of this writing, there are only five matches currently scheduled for Extreme Rules.

Really? Five? Come on WWE. No one wants to pay 50 bucks for five matches.

I'd expect to see another match or two added to the card either before or at the pay-per-view, with the Big Show and Kane vs. Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel for the WWE Tag Team Championship as a strong possibility.

Maybe a random Divas match too...but let's hope not.

13. Will There Be Interference in Any Matches?

3 of 15

Given that the WWE draft just took place and plenty of superstars are looking to make a mark on their new show, I think we'll see some surprising interferences in at least one match.

Not just obvious ones like R-Truth or Alex Riley in the WWE title match, but a mid-carder or even someone like Mark Henry (yeah, I'm sadly serious) trying to get involved in a match at Extreme Rules.

After all, there are plenty of wrestlers with nothing to do that night, so maybe this'll be the creative team's way of getting more people on the card and igniting new feuds for the new-look brands.

12. Is This Going to Be the End of the Cole/Lawler Feud?

4 of 15

Although they're announcers, not wrestlers, Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler have had one of the longest running feuds of the past few years in the WWE.

Well, it's gotta end at some point, right?

I thought their rivalry would culminate at WrestleMania 27, but I was wrong. This time around, though, I don't think I will be.

I'm going to say that we'll finally see the blowoff to the drama between Cole and Lawler at Extreme Rules.

11. What Role Will R-Truth Play?

5 of 15

Say what you want about R-Truth as a face—I didn't like him either—but his heel turn has gone pretty well so far, and I think the creative team is moving full steam ahead with his new antagonistic persona.

It'll be interesting to see whether he gets involved with the WWE title match, whether to screw over John Morrison, John Cena or both.

But no matter what exactly happens, I think that the WWE will push Truth as far as he can go, and that means he'll likely play a big role in the WWE Championship match.

10. Is Jack Swagger Going to Turn Face?

6 of 15

As the feud between Jerry Lawler (along with Jim Ross) and Michael Cole (along with Jack Swagger) has escalated, wrestling fans across the IWC have thrown plenty of possibilities out there as to what will happen during their match at Extreme Rules.

Here's one of them: Swagger turning face.

Just Google "Jack Swagger face turn" and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Anyway, I can't really picture the All-American America as a fan favorite, but who knows—maybe the creative team can.

9. Is There Any Chance John Morrison Wins the WWE Championship?

7 of 15

As recently as this week, reports were circulating around the Internet stating that John Morrison had some backstage heat after an incident with Trish Stratus during WrestleMania weekend.

So much for that, as Morrison will wrestle the Miz and John Cena in a Triple Threat Steel Cage match for the WWE Championship at Extreme Rules.

But does anyone really think he has a legit shot at winning the belt? Probably not.

8. Will the Creative Team Bury CM Punk?

8 of 15

PWInsider.com recently broke a story which stated that CM Punk is leaning toward leaving the WWE when his current contract with the company expires later this year because he isn't happy with the way he's been pushed in recent months.

Sorry—I'm nearly shedding tears over the potential loss of my favorite wrestler as I write this—but I have to wonder if the creative team will bury Punk since he might be on his way out of the company.

I really hope not, but it definitely wouldn't surprise me.

7. Will This Pay-Per-View Be Worth the Money?

9 of 15

Aside from the World Heavyweight Championship between Christian vs. Alberto Del Rio, there's a good chance that Extreme Rules will be both predictable and not so newsworthy.

Randy Orton should go over CM Punk, Cody Rhodes should take care of Rey Mysterio, the Lawler/Ross/Cole/Swagger match result doesn't really matter much and I wouldn't be surprised to see the Miz retain his WWE Championship in dirty fashion.

If that's the case, then the answer to the above question is "No." But the WHC match could certainly change that.

6. Will the Miz's Lengthy WWE Title Reign Continue?

10 of 15

When the Miz won the WWE Championship in November 2010, I don't think anyone really expected him to carry the belt for more than a month or two.

Yet, five months later, the former reality star is still holding onto the belt.

So, I continue to ask myself this question each and every week: When will The Miz's championship run end?

5. Will There Be an Appearance from Edge?

11 of 15

Here's my short answer to this question: If Christian wins, I think there's a slight chance we'll see Edge come down to celebrate with his long-time friend. If Christian loses, I definitely wouldn't expect an Edge appearance.

But since Edge just retired, I really wouldn't expect to see him either way. What a shame.

4. What Will Be the Best Match of the Night?

12 of 15

Wrestling-wise, Extreme Rules has the chance to be a very good show.

Orton vs. Punk, Rhodes vs. Mysterio and even the Miz vs. Cena vs. Morrison should all be entertaining for fans who appreciate some good in-ring action.

But my pick for the match of the night? You guessed it, Del Rio vs. Christian.

The Ladder Match is Christian's specialty, and he'll deliver a four-star match or higher. Bank on it!

3. Can We Expect to See the Undertaker?

13 of 15

F4WOnline.com reported yesterday that the Undertaker may move to the Raw brand whenever he makes his way back to the main roster.

When will that be? No one's really sure right now.

But imagine Taker returning at Extreme Rules and igniting a feud with the Miz. Yes, please.

2. Will Raw Feature Both World Champions After Extreme Rules?

14 of 15

In the two world title matches, four of the five competitors—the Miz, John Cena, John Morrison and Alberto Del Rio—are now members of the Raw roster.

That means there's a pretty good chance that Monday nights will be the home of two world championships, both the WWE and World Heavyweight belts, once Extreme Rules is over.

What will it mean for the WWE if that does indeed happen? To be honest, I'm not sure.

But us WWE fans will be wondering how the creative team will manage having two world champions on one brand if, say, Del Rio and Cena are world champions by the end of the pay-per-view.

1. Will Christian Win His First World Championship in the WWE?

15 of 15

His ECW Championship reign aside, Christian has never held a world title in the WWE.

But now that he's finally scheduled for a one-on-one bout for the World Heavyweight Championship against Alberto Del Rio at Extreme Rules, all of Christian's peeps are wondering, "Could it be? Could it finally be Christian's time to become a world champion?"

I still have my doubts that it'll happen, but when I'm watching Extreme Rules I won't stop wondering if the seemingly impossible Christian world title win comes to fruition.
