NHL Video: Power Ranking the 10 Biggest Hits of the Season

Melissa Bauer-HerzogApr 25, 2011

Hockey is one of the fastest, hardest hitting sports invented. With multiple hits in each game and tons of hits every week, it is hard to pick just 10 that no doubt belong on this list.

Some major hits didn’t look bad at all and some hits make fans hurt just by watching them. But here are some of the best and toughest hits seen this season that show just how tough these players are.

Dennis Seidenberg Hits Niklas Hjalmarsson

1 of 10

Dennis Seidenberg proves that he's a physical player by hitting Niklas Hjalmarsson on March 29, 2011. Maybe not the biggest or most spectacular hit of the season, but an attention grabber for sure.

Johnny Boychuk and Nate Thompson

2 of 10

During a game between the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, March 3rd, 2011, Johnyy Boychuk slams Nate Thompson in a bone-crunching hip check. All I can say is "Ow!"

Carey Price vs. Cam Janssen

3 of 10

Maybe not a traditional hit, but how often do you see a goalie get involved in this action? It's not really a hit but it's pretty spectacular.

Rookie Seguin Takes out Hartnell

4 of 10

No one can say Seguin isn't tough after they see this hit. This should gain the kid some respect when it comes to judging his talent.

The Giant vs. Chicago's Golden Boy

5 of 10

No matter how hard Chara hits, someone is going down.  Unluckily for Toews, it was him that got hit by the giant this time. He looks just a little bit dazed as he gets back to his feet.

Ovechkin Plays Leap Frog with P.K. Subban

6 of 10

Okay, not really. But it kind of looked like Subban set himself up for this one and made it pretty simple for Ovie to take advantage of the opportunity. Plus, it's a little bit funny to watch, which makes it so much better.

Chris Neil Takes Down Henrik Sedin

7 of 10

Even open-ice hits can be crazy to watch. This is another one that gets me hurting just by watching it. Plus, the fight after the hit is a nice little hockey tradition that can't be forgotten either.

Carcillo Gets a Little Payback

8 of 10

Carcillo is known as one of the most aggressive players in the league. Perhaps a little karma was dished out here by Mike Komisarek?

Matt Cooke Doing What Matt Cooke Does

9 of 10

No hit slideshow would be complete without Matt Cooke's dirty hits. This one got him kicked out for the rest of the regular season (10 games) and the first round of the playoffs (after he had got a suspension the month before for another hit).

Chara Hits Pacioretty

10 of 10

Probably the hardest hit of the season, this one definitely couldn't be left out. Pacioretty was said to have multiple injuries and should be sitting out the rest of the season, but there have been conflicting rumors about that.
