WWE: Pro Wrestling's Version of the Avengers

Tom ClarkApr 27, 2011

The Avengers began filming this week, and is set to be released on May 4, 2012.  Based on Marvel's flagship team book, The Avengers features four of the biggest characters in comic book history.

Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, and The Hulk, will all be brought to life once again, this time all together in the same film for the first time ever.

I am so amped for this movie.

I have been a fan boy as long as I have been a wrestling fan, and often the recurring themes in both mediums are one and the same.

Good versus evil.  Courage against villainy, right and wrong, everything that makes for a compelling story is told in the pages of a good comic, and in the ring with a good wrestling match.

So, it is on that note, that I find myself wondering, who are WWE's answer to The Avengers?

I focused on the top four characters here, so no disrespect to Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Nick Fury.  Those characters are good, but I'm talking about the guys who make Marvel the successful company it is today.

So, enough of the introduction, it's now time to begin.

Avengers Assemble!

Big Show Is the Incredible Hulk

1 of 4

Big Show physically fills the role as The Incredible Hulk.  He is huge, strong, and when he goes on a rampage, he takes out everything and everyone in his path.

Show is a veteran, and he has the respect of his peers for everything he has accomplished in the business.  He is also respected for his ability, because for a guy his size, he can work and does not just employ the typical big man move set.

Of course, you don't see The Hulk getting hoisted up off his feet every other issue like Big Show does every other week.

I mean, yeah, okay, he cannot be invincible, he has to sell, and if WWE waited on someone who matches his physical size and height to come along to make him sell, it would never happen.

And please do not say The Great Khali to me.  His size is close, but he's no Abomination.

The fact is, Show has been made to look very weak at times throughout his WWE career.

Makes no sense for a man standing seven feet tall and weighing 485 pounds to be slammed, FU'ed, or AA'ed, or whatever Cena's move will be called next week.

Wake up, WWE.  Big Show is The Hulk.  Time to let him smash.

Triple H Is Thor

2 of 4

This one is pretty obvious.

The only thing Triple H is missing is Mjolnir, the enchanted hammer, and he is Thor come to life.

One look at Hunter in his medieval viking entrance gear, and it looks as though The God of Thunder jumped right off the page and into reality.

Truth is, Triple H could very well have been Thor, if not for the controversial statement made by director Matthew Vaughn back in 2007.

At the time, Vaughn was still connected to the project, and when asked about Hunter playing the Norse God, had this to say.

"I'll give you two reasons I don't put much stock in the otherwise very interesting rumor: 'Chris' and 'Benoit.' With wrestling taking its biggest PR hit ever, I would be incredibly surprised if Marvel were to take that big of a risk with Thor."

Right, because when one pro wrestler loses it, murders his family and kills himself, then that means that anyone associated with WWE is off limits.

After all, if one wrestler loses his morals and does the unthinkable, then it's a stretch to believe that another wrestler would actually end up being pretty normal and perhaps perfect for the role.

Regardless, Triple H has moved on and done very well for himself in his chosen profession.  Marvel's loss is WWE's gain.

Thor's hammer vs. Triple H's sledgehammer.  The Game and The God.  The King of Kings and The God of Thunder.

Man, no way these two are not the same guy.  Verily.

Randy Orton Is Iron Man

3 of 4

Tony Stark, the man wearing the Iron Man armor, is a second-generation businessman, an intelligent guy who is prone to self-destructive behavior.

He is a rebel who marches to his own beat, and takes orders from no one.  He is calculating in his approach to business and strategy as a hero.

Sounds like Randy Orton to me.

Randy's sadistic smile and cold stare set him apart from the pack, as he brings a heel mentality to his newfound role as one of WWE's top faces.

Iron Man is all hero, of course, but imagine if that intelligence and drive to outdo his father were twisted, just a few degrees to the right.

Tony Stark could very well become Randy Orton, and instead of wearing armor to fight evil, he could use it as a weapon to serve his own purposes.

With a little more fleshing out of his current character, Orton could establish some friendly associations with some of the other faces in WWE, proving to be a loyal teammate, much like Stark.

Stark's will to fight is matched only by his loyalty to the other Avengers, and he is considered a trusted friend and overall good man.  Randy Orton's character could easily evolve into this.

Yeah, I don't think so either.  This is Orton we're talking about here.  Trust him to have your back and he'll burn you down.  Come to think of it, he may be a more intriguing character than Tony Stark.

John Cena Is Captain America

4 of 4

Come on, who else would this have been?

John Cena has become the all-American boy who is tough and brave, yet humble and good-hearted, always doing the right thing.

He walks the straight and narrow, and even though the odds may be against him, he never strays from his values in his pursuit of justice.

Wait, were we talking about Cena or Cap?

Captain America is a symbol of the United States, a red-white-and-blue soldier who represents the best of the Marvel Universe.

Much like Triple H and Thor, Cena was rumored to be in the running to play the first Avenger back in 2009.  John shot down the rumor, saying that it was indeed just gossip.

Have to say, I'm not much for John as an actor, but man, he does look the part.  Who knows, in an alternate reality, John is Cap, and Hunter is Thor, and David Arquette is World Champion.

Wait a minute...
