UFC 129 Fight Card: What Mark Hominick Must Do to Beat Jose Aldo

Dale De SouzaApr 23, 2011

Jose Aldo is the Featherweight Champ for a good reason: He has been untouchable on the feet, and he's dominated to where it's tough to really get him to the ground.

He's a good fighter and one of the best in the sport, but there's one problem: Aldo decided to be a fighting champion and not back down from the challenge of Mark Hominick.

At first glance, it seems like Aldo's last threat is Hominick, and at first you begin to see what brought Aldo here, but then you recall moments like when Manvel Gamburyan fought him and had him hurt in the first round.

What did it for Aldo was a hard chin, takedown defense and some heart, but against Hominick, he'll need every bit of it.

Hominick's been saying that Aldo has never faced a fighter like himself before, and he is right—Aldo really hasn't.

Granted, Hominick has a good submission game and isn't shabby on takedowns, but it's the ability to hurt people standing up that got him here.

That's what Hominick will need in this fight—and I have been saying this for months now; he needs to not only stun Aldo the way Gamburyan did, but he also needs to come forward with his strikes and pull the trigger the way Gamburyan should have when Hominick does realize that Aldo has been hurt.

Stunning Aldo and not finishing the job is how he got around to knocking Gamburyan out in Round 2, and unless Hominick doesn't mind becoming another victim with his home crowd watching, he'd better comfort himself with the risk of moving forward and bringing it to Aldo.

The minute he lets up and doesn't go in for the kill, Aldo will hand Hominick his ass without any remorse.

If Hominick wants that belt, he needs to not stop until the ref waves the fight off.
