UFC 129 Main Card Press Conference: GSP and Dana White Know Bruce Lee and JKD
UFC President Dana White is an honorary Canuck. He raves about our people, cleanliness, restaurants and city. White speaks the truth and heaps praise and awe upon our champion, George St. Pierre.
The UFC held their UFC 129 press conference this afternoon at 1pm at the Ricoh Coliseum on the Canadian National Exhibition grounds.
GSP looked primed and ready to go, as always, as he answered questions and spoke of things like his legacy, his respect for his opponent Jake Shields and his unique methods of training such as gymnastics.
"A gymnast can emulate the other athlete the best." St. Pierre stated. "The other athlete cannot emulate the gymnast. This means and is because the gymnast is the superior athlete and that is why I train it."
These are the thoughts and preparations that make GSP who and what he is. He is a true martial artist in this sport and his style and approach are extremely intriguing to a traditional martial artist.
A great martial artist once said, "Laugh and snicker all you want, but leave your ego at the door because you take and use what works and you cut away all the rest for victory."
That is the approach GSP takes and not many fighters would do that.
I'm not getting all preacher here, and I don't want to lose you on this, but that martial artist was Bruce Lee. In my opinion, the greatest in history.
The core of Bruce Lee's JKD is that you take what works for you as an individual and your tool box and you make it your own. That's JKD—whatever works.
We'll see if it works for George.
A cool side note is Dana White had a Jun Fan Gung Fu t-shirt on in his press conference, and that is why White is cool with me. That just shows he respects the art and is a fan of Bruce Lee (Jun Fan) himself.
Lastly, another thing that GSP said in the conference rang with me and that was that he said, "To me, I don't have the belt, the belt is in the middle. Jake is a champion and I am a champion, the best man is gonna win the title."
With an approach like that, it is hard to see the champ actually losing his title.
The sensei says that GSP is just too much for Shields anywhere and everywhere in that cage and the Canadian champion will come out with a victory via KO.
