NFL Draft 2011: Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Mark Dominik Loves Those Corners
"I have a fundamental belief I stole from the Jets. I don't think you can ever have enough cornerbacks." --Tampa Bay Buccaneer GM Mark Dominik
Jon Gruden couldn't get enough quarterbacks.
Mark Dominik is his polar opposite. Dominik loves cornerbacks.
Right now, he has six cornerbacks on the Buccaneers roster: Ronde Barber, Aqib Talib, Myron Lewis, E.J. Biggers, Elbert Mack and D.J. Johnson.
Could be Ronde's swan-song season this year. Talib enters the final year of his current contract and we're all familiar with the ongoing theme of Talib.
Dominik is going to draft corners next week. One, maybe two and there will be free agents brought in as well.
Here's a look at the players he's brought in for visits and/or private workouts at One Buccaneer Place in preparation for the draft next week:
Prince Amukamara, Nebraska, 6'1", 205 Projected First Round
It would be a mighty shock to see the Bucs pick a corner in the first round. If by chance they did, what would it mean?
The Prince is rated as the second or third best corner in the draft behind Patrick Patterson of LSU and Miami's Brandon Harris.
Cortez Allen, Citadel, 6'1", 197 Projected Fourth or Fifth Round
This team is good a finding guys from small schools and you could say the Citadel would have to get bigger to be small.
Davon House, New Mexico State, 6'0", 200 Projected Second or Third Round
It would be no surprise to see the Bucs go corner in either of those rounds.
Curtis Bown, Texas, 5'11", 185 Projected Second or Third Round
Solid prospect who would fit the Buccaneers' scheme.
Ron Parker, Newberry College, 6'0", 206 Unknown
Parker is an interesting scenario. He's a strong safety from Newberry College, a D-II school in South Carolina. Came out as a junior. Has blazing speed, runs anywhere from 4.28 to 4.35.
This may be Dominik's 2011 diamond in the rough. He's not a corner but the Bucs need safety help.
All these players have visited and Parker has had a private workout. Don't be surprised to see one or two of their names called by the Buccaneers.
