With Division Pulling Away, The Eagles face a Must Win In San Fransisco.

Orlando MoralesOct 10, 2008

It will be another white knuckle afternoon this Sunday as the Eagles take on the 49ers. After two disappointing losses, the Eagles face a must win game.

The rest of the NFC East is sitting pretty with two teams at 4-1 (Cowboys and Redskins) and the Giants leading at 4-0.

A loss in San Fransisco on Sunday could pretty much spell the end for the Eagles as it would drop their record to 2-4 and 1-4 in the NFC. The 49ers have a lot of weapons at their disposal and should again pose a very tough game for the Eagles.

After last Sunday's embarrassing loss to Washington, Eagles fans later found out that Brian Westbrook had two broken ribs. Westbrook is now ruled out for Sunday's game. Reggie Brown, Shawn Andrews and J.R. Reed are expected to miss the game as well.

So it's pretty fair to say the Eagles face an uphill battle on Sunday as their opponent is pretty much healthy.

Andy Reid's play calling has come into question after two straight games where his offense has become pretty much predictable and ineffective after the first quarter. The red zone offense has been pitiful for the past two weeks late in the game, failing to score key touchdowns at the goal line in both games.

The defense which had been the NFL's best through four weeks was ripped and torn apart by Jim Zorn's Redskins for 388 yards and a season high 204 on the ground from Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts. That defense faces another elite back this Sunday in Frank Gore.

Gore a runner much like the Rams' Steven Jackson has the power and speed to put up big numbers against an Eagles defense which looked like a high school squad just a week ago.

This week, Donovan McNabb held a players-only meeting at the Eagles NovaCare Complex in Philadelphia and went on to express how embarrassed he was with his team's performance the past two weeks. That is the type of leadership that this team needs right now, they have looked confused on both sides of the ball for the past two weeks.

With Philly in a big pickle right now, expect them to play with a sense of urgency on both sides of the ball and we can all hope that Andy Reid's play calling woes come to a screeching halt this Sunday.

A loss here, and you can expect complete mayhem in the City of Brotherly Love. It's an uphill battle from here for the Eagles as they will need a mad dash to make the playoffs.
