The Start of the NHL Season Means Allsports will be Busy

Walt WebbOct 9, 2008

So the 2008/2009 NHL season got under way tonight with the Toronto Maple Leafs travelling to Detroit to take on the defending champion Detroit Red Wings. The Wings used the opener as an opportunity to put up their 2008 Stanley Cup banner with a brief ceremony. There will be numerous sports news articles about hockey on the web in the very near future.

The opener was televised on the CBC and Toronto put a bit of a damper on the Red Wings party, skating away with a 3-2 road victory. Toronto played a very disciplined and responsible hockey game and deserved the two points. Toronto had a respectable preseason and the main thing allsports noticed was that the team speed is better this year than last. It looks like Ron Wilson has the players buying into his system and tonight the Leafs played it very well.

I think if the leafs can play responsible hockey and the young players don’t have too many brain cramps they will suprise a few teams (like Detroit tonight) and could be vying for a playoff spot once April comes around. I know the season just started but opening night looked very positive.

On a side note the National League Baseball Championship started tonight as too,  so expect baseball sports news on the web as well.
