UFC 129 Fight Card: What This Fight Means to Georges St. Pierre
Of all of the bouts that GSP has had throughout his career, his bout with Jake Shields really sticks out.
Of course, he is the favorite, but favorites do not always win. In this bout, every aspect of GSP's game will be tested.
The questions is, what does GSP gain from this fight?
If GSP wins:
If GSP wins this fight, it will not only present a very strong argument for his pound for pound status but it will as well open up bigger fight opportunities.
He may not instantly try to fight Anderson Silva at 185lbs, but he may take a lesser known opponent to help him adapt to the weight change or even a possible 178lbs catchweight bout.
His pound for pound status would really be affected if he beats Shields; the reason being is on any pound for pound top 10 that is worth noting, Jake Shields is top seven.
The possible move in weight is really the big question for everyone right now. People want Anderson Silva vs GSP. I know I want that fight. But what does either have to prove by taking that fight?
If Anderson wins, then he can say that he beat the king of the weight classes below him, but then if GSP were to win, then his claim would be much higher looked upon.
So, this bout in all truths is a door opener for GSP, and will really affect which path GSP takes to close out his amazing MMA career.
The welterweight division will be 100 percent cleaned out, so the only way left is up!
If GSP loses:
If GSP loses, then that will cause a re-evaluation in his career (not saying he will retire).
There will be many questions on where he should go from there and who he should fight next. Should he go to 185lbs anyway? Maybe stick at 170lbs and have one or two fights then rematch Shields.
His pound for pound status would not be affected too much, he would stay top five but Shields would move to top 4-5. It would take a couple of fights top regain top three status, but that wouldn't be hard to accomplish.
The main question though would be which weight should he continue at? Would he take time off and add mass and go up to 185lbs, or would he want to work his way back to avenge the Shields loss?
GSP losing (which as we know is unusual) is a hard topic to speak on because it is so odd to think about.
In closing:
It will interesting to see where Georges' mindset is.
Has the media attention about the Anderson Silva super fight gotten to him? Is all of his focus on Jake Shields?
These questions will be answered in just a little over a week.
People say it will not be exciting, but if you like a good MMA styled chess match up, then you will enjoy this fight.
How good is the submission defense of GSP? That will be answered very soon.
