It's Time for the Yorks To Open the Bank

Steven ResnickOct 9, 2008

It is time for the Yorks—the owners of the 49ers—to open the bank up and get the 49ers a big time receiver, a position that they have lacked since Terrell Owens' departure.

In fact, the most receiving yards came from a tight end in Eric Johnson with 825 yards. The most by an actual wide receiver since Owens left was 733 yards that was shared by Antonio Bryant and Brandon Lloyd.

Is it a wonder the 49ers have struggled in the passing game since Owens left? Nope. The Yorks have done nothing to improve the 49ers at wide receiver. They have drafted a few receivers, and they haven't done anything yet.

In fact, the 49ers had two chances of drafting DeSean Jackson, who would have helped the team tremendously, but instead they went with Kentwan Balmer, who isn't even ready to play yet and Chilo Rachal who is a project as well.

The receivers the 'Niners have drafted recently haven't done anything either. Jason Hill, Brandon Williams, Rasheed Marshall, Marcus Maxwell, Josh Morgan, Derrick Hamilton, and Rashaun Woods...All I can say is ouch!!!!!!!!!

The next part to this is that they drafted Vernon Davis because of his speed and his ability to get past linebackers with that great speed. So far this season, Davis has five catches for 87 yards. So that's one catch for a little over 17 yards per game.

What was the point of drafting him if the 49ers weren't going to use him where he's most effective? Well, another reason why he isn't being used is because no team respects the 49ers' passing game, even though O'Sullivan has done a good job with what he's got.

Isaac Bruce is getting older, and he's more of that complementary receiver now. He can get open, but he's lost a step, so he's not going to get those long throws and score like he used to. So, what does this mean for the 49ers? It means they need to go out and get a wide receiver that defenses will respect. The 49ers already have a great running back in Gore.

There are two options the 49ers could look at: Either wait 'til the offseason or go for a trade.

The first, and most controversial, one would be to go after Chad Ocho Cinco, better known as Chad Johnson. Now, he would be a great fit for the 49ers because he just wants to win, but the problem is that the 49ers do not win enough games to keep him happy.

He would also be a controversial guy that the 49ers would more than likely not go after because of his end zone dances. And he likes to talk. Something the 49ers learned with the Terrell Owens disaster.

The second guy to go after, who would make the most sense for the 49ers, is, of course, Chad Ocho Cinco's teammate, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, and this is why the York's need to open the bank up.

He's a free agent at the end of the year and he's going to have a lot of teams after him for his services. He would become that dominating receiver the 49ers have needed since Owens left. He's still relatively young at 31 and has at least another four or five more years of putting up solid numbers. He would be a great fit for the 49ers.

The last guy that the 49ers are more likely to get, and is certainly younger than T.J., but hasn't been as consistent as Houshmandzadeh, is Roy Williams of the Lions. The good news for the 49ers is that he has the experience in a Mike-Martz-run offense, so he would definitely be a fast student, and he's also had J.T. O'Sullivan throwing him balls in practice with the Lions as well.

He certainly would be a great fit but would probably benefit from a longer contract than one given to T.J Houshmandzadeh.

The best thing for the Yorks to do is make a decision on which player would benefit the 49ers the most and go get them. Spend the money on what the 49ers fans have been wanting ever since Owens left: a dominant receiver.

Every 49ers team that was a playoff team/championship team had a dominant wideout. It's something the team has been lacking for a long while, and it's time to get one and lock him up for a few years.
