Arsenal's EPL Title Dreams on Life Support After Liverpool Draw

Mohamed Eldin MasriApr 17, 2011

Another one bites the dust.

Arsenal's EPL title dreams are near dead as they draw against Liverpool in what was a disappointing performance that leaves even more question for Wenger to answer.

Wenger has no Plan B at all

Watching Mourinho with Madrid last night makes this even more painful for Arsenal fans, but Arsene Wenger is very weak tactically when compared to Mourinho and Ferguson. As has been demonstrated by Ferguson in the FA Cup against Arsenal, the Scottish manager fielded six defensive players against Arsenal and was able to beat them by two goals to nil. This was down to tactics. Ferguson knows how to work with what he has.

Last night, Mourinho used Pepe with brilliance against Barcelona, where the Portuguese fielded his compatriot as a defensive midfielder to block Barcelona's midfield.

Wenger does so little tactically, it's not a surprise he was never able to beat Mourinho before. The Arsenal manager always plays with his own style and rarely ever has a plan B. Once they face a stubborn physical side, the Gunners keep passing the ball aimlessly.

During every press conference after the game, Wenger always mentions the things that didn't go his way, and mentions how bad the referee was at times. While the Frenchman is usually spot-on with his assertions, he rarely confronts his shortcomings.

This is evident during the transfer windows, where Wenger almost always gets an opportunity to buy players which Arsenal would benefit from greatly, but in the end the Frenchman refuses to do so.

The FA reeks of corruption

A gift of a penalty. Few would argue that Arsenal's penalty was a wrong decision, but shortly after, the referee made a comical decision and gave Liverpool an absolute gift of a penalty.

This isn't the first referee to ruin a season for a team in the EPL, but the FA never even lift a finger, they just take advantage of the situation and make a piss load of money.

The FA needs to punish referees that make heinous mistakes.Aa clown like Howard Webb ruins a team's season every time he makes a decision, as has been witnessed many times before.

Instead of punishments on the match officials, the FA do what any other dictator would do; they punish the managers and the players, but they never punish one of their own.

Hypocrisy at its finest.

It's all in the head

In their last encounter, Manchester United beat Arsenal by two goals to nil. While it may seem like a random routine at the moment, it was anything but.

United fielded six defensive-minded players, some of whom were nowhere near the Arsenal players in term of skill. However, they were able to win with ease.

This is mainly due to the fact that the United youngsters grew up with a winning mentality. They were able to scrap their way to victory, where as Arsenal often fail to see games through.

The Liverpool game was proof. Yes, indeed Arsenal got cheated with a free penalty, and yes the goal was scored in the 12th minute of extra time when there were only eight minutes awarded, but Arsenal couldn't hold on to the ball for just a minute or so, which ended in their current predicament, another season without any silverware as things stand.

Arsenal should've pulled out a result regardless of how bad the referee was, but no plan at all and an insipid performance by the Arsenal players led to a disappointing draw.

Conclusion

Arsenal fans are sick and tired of the trophy-less gap. Indeed, Arsenal get cheated in a lot of games, but they fail in many tests because of their inadequacy and their lack of focus.

Wenger will be subject to criticism, and rightfully so. The Arsenal manager is one-dimensional in his style of play, and that has put Arsenal where they are now, in the middle of nowhere.

Chelsea are only two points behind Arsenal, and as things stand and with the Arsenal players heartbroken, it's safe to say that Arsenal finishing third wouldn't be a shock. With Arsenal still to face Tottenham and United, that seems very likely.

Arsene Wenger has done many things for Arsenal over the years, and the board backs him for another season at least, if he doesn't change his ways, Arsenal will go nowhere faster.

Wenger should buy better players, and get rid of names like Almunia and Denilson, for they are not considered Arsenal material. Should Wenger fail to address the Arsenal's weaknesses, and his own, the Arsenal fans will only say one word:

"Leave."
