Dana White: Potential Silva vs. St-Pierre Matchup Looking Good

Nick CaronApr 15, 2011

Just when chances were starting to look bleak of seeing a pound-for-pound matchup between Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre, UFC president Dana White has stirred up the pot once again.

While praising his company’s welterweight champion, White also confessed that he thinks that the upcoming fight at UFC 129 against Jake Shields could be a tough one for St-Pierre.

“This Jake Shields fight is a much bigger fight for Georges St-Pierre than people realize. I know Georges St. Pierre knows it,” White told USA Today. “A lot of people who exactly know what they're talking about and know what they're doing, know what a serious fight this Jake Shields fight is for him and how tough it really is.”

Still, until Anderson Silva loses, Dana considers the middleweight champion to be the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

“There's no doubt that in my book [Georges St-Pierre] is the No. 2 pound-for-pound guy in the world," he said. "But it's hard to knock Anderson Silva off that.”

With both fighters being so dominant in their respective divisions, however, there have been rumors circulating for a couple years now that there may eventually be a fight between the two champions to determine who truly is the pound-for-pound king.

White let the world know that the UFC is not shying away from this potentially monumental fight and that it is not going away just yet.

“That's why, if both these guys win their fights, we do the pound-for-pound fight,” he declared.

With UFC 129 coming up and with Anderson Silva recently having been booked for a fight in August against the last man to hold a win over him, Yushin Okami, there is no guarantee that we’ll ever see this fight...

But it sure would be fun, wouldn’t it?
