Video: Nick Diaz Seriously Looking at Quitting MMA to Join Boxing?

Nick CaronApr 14, 2011

Just when we thought things couldn’t get any crazier for Strikeforce Welterweight Champion, Nick Diaz, they just did.

In an interview with Inside MMA, Diaz spoke out following his win over Paul Daley, about the lack of competition he sees left in Strikeforce and the possibility of him leaving the sport to pursue a career in boxing.

“They don’t have anybody else for me to fight now. I’m better than all these guys they have,” Diaz said of Strikeforce. “The guys they have ranked above me, I’m sure they don’t wanna fight me.”

To be fair to Diaz, he is right. There really aren’t any more Strikeforce welterweights who are anywhere near his ranking.

With Strikeforce having recently been purchased by Zuffa, though, there have been rumors of potential super-fights with UFC fighters for Diaz and other Strikeforce champions.

But without anything set in stone and UFC President, Dana White, having said that it will continue to be “business as usual” for Strikeforce; Nick Diaz doesn’t seem like he even has a desire to continue fighting.

“I don’t see much of a future in this sport, for me. I honestly don’t,” he complained. “Especially if there’s not a whole [expletive]-load of money going on.”

“I’m signed into some contract that I don’t know anything about! All that I know is that my life’s a living hell.”

Diaz’s coach and manager, Cesar Gracie, also spoke about the potential for Nick to take a few professional boxing fights in the future.

“We’re looking at some guys with name recognition. Maybe not the time guy in the world, necessarily, but someone that the public knows,” he admitted. “I’d love [Fernando] Vargas to get in there with him.”

“I know they’ve contacted [Diaz] before and he’s very interested. We’ve actually signed on the dotted line for that fight, ourselves, and we’re waiting for [Vargas] now.”

“We’re looking at September, October for something like that. We’re just waiting for their camp now.”

When asked if Diaz’s next fight will be in a boxing ring, Gracie responded with a simple and confident, “Right.”

No word from Zuffa yet on this news, but things are likely about to very, very interesting.
