All Sports thinks the NHL would be a Big hit in Europe

Walt WebbOct 7, 2008

While on the web a day or so ago I came across a sports news article on TSN that stated that the Ottawa Senators earned a split in their series opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Now the big difference here is that the two games were played in Stockholm, Sweden, in front of a packed house of fans. The Rangers and Lightning enjoyed the same atmosphere in Prague, Czech Republic.

With the support shown to the NHL overseas, Allsports has one question to ask my fellow sports news readers on the web. Will there be a European division of the National Hockey League in the not too distant future? The logistics of scheduling games of such a nightmare would be overwhelming at the out set, but once in place the league would truly be a World Hockey League. Maybe it would take teams to go on very extended road trips for say a month to get the games in or they could take a page out of Major League Baseball and just have a set amount of cross over games. In the end the European champion could play the North American Champion for Lord Stanley’s Mug.

Mr Bettman has been beating his heat against the wall for 15 years trying to ram hockey down the throats of people in the Southern US. I say if they don’t want to support the game there, take it away from them. There are so many other places in the world that would welcome the NHL with open arms. I wrote a previous sports news article about this subject on my web log Here.

On a side note I think Craig Hartsburg is a great fit for “Head Coach” in Ottawa and will command respect from the elite players there, having been one himself back in the day.
