WWE: Is It Finally Time for Christian to Become World Champion?

The Doctor Chris MuellerApr 13, 2011

Spoilers from this week's Smackdown tapings are included in this article, so if you wish to keep Smackdown a surprise, then stop reading now.

According to www.pwinsider.com, this week's Smackdown tapings saw the new World Title match for WWE Extreme Rules set.  The match will now be Christian vs. Alberto Del Rio.

This comes after the shocking and sad news that due to nagging injuries and major future risks to his life and health, Edge was forced to retire and give up the World Heavyweight Championship.

After hearing the news of Edge's situation, WWE must have been in shock and extremely disappointed.

The WWE has put a lot of effort into the Del Rio/Edge feud, and to have it stop short must have had the creative team scrambling.

The announcement will be made at the top of Friday's show that a battle royal was held to determine the new No. 1 contender for the vacant championship.

Christian went on to win that battle royal and secure his spot in the main event for the Smackdown brand.

This is a huge step for Christian because since returning to WWE he has had few opportunities if any to become World Champion, a feat he accomplished while in TNA.

Christian is probably one of the more debated talents in the IWC in terms of worthiness of a World Title in WWE.  He has many supporters, and just as many people who think he is a mid-card talent at best.

Christian has proven time and time again that he is a reliable asset both in and out of the ring.  His popularity is unquestionable, and his drive and dedication to his craft is undeniable.

While they were a tag team, Edge and Christian were two of the most popular stars in WWE at a time when tag team wrestling still meant something to the biggest player in the wrestling world, WWE.

Some people are expecting Del Rio to come out of Extreme Rules with the championship, but I am not so sure, WWE may finally want to put the spotlight on Christian.

He is not a young gun anymore, and to have him cemented in history as a World Champion is something I think he deserves.

He has put on many quality matches over the years, which I feel are often overlooked due to the fact that it's Christian.  His match with Chris Jericho when the ECW brand was still around was one of the best matches that year not on a PPV.

The two were going head to head as ECW Champion and World Champion, and Christian won clean.

Christian needs to start amping up and throwing some new moves into his matches.  He is a great talent, but some of his moves can be seen coming a mile away.

Christian has done everything you can do in his career save for one thing: become World Champion; and I say it's time.

I have been and always will be a Peep, and I hope that come Extreme Rules, Christian walks out the World Heavyweight Champion.
