Edge Retires from WWE: 5 Candidates to Substitute for Him at Extreme Rules

Jon SainzApr 12, 2011

With Edge reportedly retiring from the WWE, they have one pressing issue. As a World Heavyweight Champion, he should be defending the title, but since he's leaving the company, he won't be able to do that.

I suppose the title will be vacated until the next WWE PPV, Extreme Rules. A match between Edge and Alberto del Rio was scheduled to take place at that PPV, but now the WWE needs to find a replacement for the Ultimate Opportunist.

Here are five guys who could fill in Edge shoes at least this once.

Surprise Posibilities

Three scenarios come to mind:

1) Edge isn't really retiring and he enters the match as planned. This could happen since we've got a great lack of information on Edge's retirement, it could just be a plot for him to distract Del Rio and take advantage of the opportunity, after all he is the Master Opportunist.

2) Nobody substitutes him. It's simple, there's no champion, so the number one contender gets the WHC by default. Not likely, but still a possibility.

3) This is Extreme Rules and we haven't seen a battle royal in quite some time, so why not now?

5) Ezekiel Jackson

The Corre has the Tag Team and Intercontinental Championships, this guy has none of those, so I think he may feel a little left out, so he goes after the big one just off the bat.

After all, he was the last ECW Champion and won it by defeating Edge's best friend Christian, so it also could ignite a feud between the two of them.

4) the Undertaker

Another not likely scenario, but with the Deadman you never know, he's a big draw and he's never had a match against ADR.

On the downside his body won't let him do much after the brutal fight he had with HHH at WrestleMania. Could be a big surprise though.

3) Kane

Here's one guy with absolutely nothing going on.

Over the years he's put a lot of guys over, so he has experience and is willing to do it. He is also able to give us entertaining matches, so all in all this may be a great match up for Alberto Del Rio.

2) the Big Show

5 of 6

Another guy with a lot of free time.

He's actually never been World Heavyweight Champion in the WWE, and his chances may soon be over. He's also someone you can always count on to give you a big show (sorry, bad pun).

1) Christian

This would be the most obvious choice for various reasons, for one, he was in the match for the number on contender spot, he's also Edge's best friend and to top it off has an ongoing feud with Alberto Del Rio.

Can you ask for more?
