Edge and the 10 Greatest Moments of His Career

Justin TateApr 12, 2011

Edge has announced his retirement on Raw this week.

If his retirement is truthful and permanent, we will never see him compete in the squared circle again.

That means we will just have our memories of Edge's greatest in-ring moments to look upon.

Here are the ten greatest moments of his career according to me.

Edge and Christian Win the First TLC (Tables Ladders Chairs) Match

This is the first part of their first official Tables, Ladders, Chairs, Match.

This is the very first Tables Ladders Chairs match held at Summer Slam 2000. This match was inspired by the three greatest tag teams of the time, The Hardy Boyz, the Dudley Boyz, and Edge and Christian.

Edge and Christian had the tendency to use chairs in their matches, specifically to perform a move called the Con-Chair-To.

This move involved one dazed individual being caught in between two fast hitting chair-shots to the head making a sort of metal-sandwich in which their head becomes the meaty center.

The Hardy Boyz crafted amazing feats off of ladders such as the Swanton Bomb and Leg Drop that often left them just as hurt as the foes down below they dropped upon.

And finally the Dudleys and their obsession with tables. Bubba-Ray caught that crazed look and you knew what was coming next.

With a shove and a sick grin, Bubba would yell to his brother D-Von, "D-VON, GET THE TABLES!"

D-Von would comply cheerfully and get a wooden table only so the brothers could send someone through it.

Since all three teams were great rivals at the time, a special match was created around their signature foreign object, The Tables, Ladders, Chairs match and changed the game forever.

Edge Wins the "First Money in the Bank" Ladder Match

Chris Jericho, Christian, Chris Benoit, Shelton Benjamin, Kane, and of course Edge all participated in a ladder match where a briefcase was suspended instead of the usual championship belt.

The objective was to attain this briefcase, which held a contract that guaranteed a shot at the WWE championship whenever the holder of the briefcase chose to "cash it in".

Edge fought long and hard and won his chance to win the WWE championship.

The Live Sex Celebration

This segment got some of the biggest ratings WWE has ever achieved.
This segment got some of the biggest ratings WWE has ever achieved.

Edge had just won his first WWE championship and wanted to celebrate by having steamy relations in the middle of the ring with his girl Lita.

Of course the sensuous ceremony was interrupted. Ric "Nature Boy" Flair intervened and eventually John Cena joined in as well to attack Edge.

That doesn't really matter though. What matters is the 5.2 rating the episode got. This proved Edge could pull in massive ratings and was an official WWE attraction.

Edge Shaves Kurt Angle Bald

Very fun moment for Edge.
Very fun moment for Edge.

When Edge and Kurt Angle went head to head (pun intended) in a match where the loser would lose his hair, I was thrilled.

Anyone watching was wondering if Edge would lose his long blond locks, but he didn't.

Instead Kurt Angle lost his brown hair and sported a few hilarious wigs before finally sporting the bald haircut that would come to define him.

Thank you Edge for a hilarious moment of television.

Edge Cashes in His Briefcase to Defeat John Cena for the WWE Championship

In the aftermath of a bloody and hectic main event, John Cena "defends" his championship.
In the aftermath of a bloody and hectic main event, John Cena "defends" his championship.

John Cena had just defeated Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, Kane, Carlito, and Chris Masters in an Elimination Chamber match for the WWE championship.

A bloody and battered and bruised Cena was a prime target for the vicious spear of Edge.

Vince McMahon announced Edge had cashed in his briefcase that he won from the first "Money in the Bank" ladder match for a title shot.

The briefcase guaranteed the shot, so Cena had to defend. Edge went down into the ring, speared Cena twice and pinned for the victory and his first ever WWE championship.

Edge Defeats Kurt Angle to Become the King of the Ring 2001

This the first part of the big finals match-up between Edge and Kurt Angle.
This the first part of the big finals match-up between Edge and Kurt Angle.

Edge had already fought through Rhyno that night. Kurt Angle fought through Christian.

Both men had defeated the likes of Test, Hardcore Holly, Perry Saturn, and Jeff Hardy in previous qualifying matches.

Now both men had to stand face to face in the finals of the King of the Ring tournament.

The significance of such a win is that every King of the Ring outside of arguably Billy Gunn has gone on to do wonderful things.

The list of names reads like a Hall of Fame roll call. Names like Stone Cole Steve Austin, Triple H, Bret Hart, Randy Savage, and so many others.

Because of that fateful night of the King of the Ring 2001, Edge can say he has joined those legendary ranks.

Edge Wins Heavyweight Championship the First Time by Defeating the Undertaker

Watching this with Spanish-speaking announcers is extremely hilarious.
Watching this with Spanish-speaking announcers is extremely hilarious.

Edge defeated the Undertaker to win the World Heavyweight Championship for the very first time, by cashing in a second "Money In the Bank" contract after Mark Henry had thrashed the Undertaker.

Undertaker had also defended his belt against Batista in a steel cage match that night.

The very wounded animal that was the Undertaker was taken by the violent hunter Edge, waiting in the bushes for his chance to pounce and seize his prey.

Edge and Christian vs Hardy Boyz Overshadows Steve Austin vs HHH @ No Mercy

8 of 10
Edge competes in the first ever tag team ladder match.
Edge competes in the first ever tag team ladder match.

This is before the TLC (Tables, Ladders, Chairs) match was ever created. Edge and Christian as well as the Hardy Boyz were not the legendary marquee teams they are now.

When they faced each other in a grueling first ever tag team ladder match at No Mercy October 17, 1999 in front of over 18,000 attendees, they were met with a standing ovation at the match's end.

The critically acclaimed match soared the stock of both teams extraordinarily high, becoming something else greater than the usual wrestling match.

The match soared so high that the main event between megastars Stone Cold Steve Austin and HHH was completely overshadowed and somewhat forgotten.

Edge and Christian may have lost that match, but they gained a slew of fans as well as made history. That is all that anyone can ask for.

Edge Wins the Royal Rumble

Edge throws John Cena out the ring to win the Royal Rumble.

Edge wins the Royal Rumble in 2010. That is one of the greatest tests of a great superstar.

The Royal Rumble is a match where 30 superstars enter the ring and try to eliminate each other by throwing each other over the top rope.

If King of the Ring has numerous great names that have won the coveted title, Royal Rumble has far more.

From Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, and Shawn Michaels to Steve Austin, The Rock, and Triple H, everyone great wins at least one Royal Rumble.

Edge did so in 2010 coming in as the number 29. The greatest of achieving this feat is remarkable and adds something very big to his resume.

Tables, Ladders, Chairs II @ Wresltemania 17

10 of 10
The greatest match of all time.
The greatest match of all time.

Is Wrestlemania 17 the greatest Wrestlemania of all time? Many wrestling fans believe so.

Why? Well there was Kurt Angle Vs Chris Benoit performed incredibly well.

Steve Austin vs The Rock was electrifying.

But something else must've made this Wrestlemania even more special. Hmmmmm...TLC II!!!

The first TLC match was amazing, but this TLC match was epic.

The drama, the chairs, the leaps and falls from ladders, the broken bodies sent crashing through tables.

It was splintered bloody poetry.

Hair, flesh, and bone sacrificed for the audience approval.

If this isn't the greatest wrestling match of all time, it's pretty damn close.

For Edge to have participated in such a match, meant he was defining his legacy in a way nothing else possibly could.

His legacy as well as the legacy of all the other performers grew exponentially from this moment on.

Thank you Edge! If you really are retiring, we'll miss you.
