Chael Sonnen: 'GSP Is Going to Need the Shot' at Anderson Silva After UFC 129

Dale De SouzaApr 11, 2011

Getting quotes from an interview with Chael Sonnen is like getting a fight involving two dudes in four-ounce gloves when you turn the TV  over for an episode of UFC Unleashed:

You're going to get exactly what you hope for, and then some, every nine times out of ten.

Uncle Chael gave Ariel Helwani plenty to quote him on when he talked about a variety of topics, among  which included the events that led to his time away from the cage, and the Rashad Evans-Jon Jones situation.

On Jon Jones, Sonnen had nothing but praise for the current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, who is among the Top 5 pound-for-pound kings in MMA right now, whether you like it or not.

As Sonnen said to Helwani earlier today about "Bones":

"He brings more to the table than just being the world champion...He brings integrity, he brings class, he's good for the industry and he's good for the sport. And most importantly, you need to do what's good for sport. I get real frustrated with these guys who are just in it for themselves...But listen, Ariel, Jon Jones is not the hot topic of 205 pounds...The hot topic that everybody should be talking about is that he's been the champion for three weeks and not one coward at 205 has challenged him. Not one guy has called him out and said, 'I want to fight that guy.' If you're all scared of a 23-year-old kid, turn your gloves in, sign your pink slip and show yourself the door."

Of course, Sonnen couldn't resist opening his squawk-box when it came to Evans either.

"The one guy they say gets to fight him comes out and says, 'I don't want to fight him'...If you don't want to fight him, go. This is a business to become champion. All these guys want to tell everyone they're in the UFC, but they don't want to have to carry the heavy water. Challenge Jon Jones if you're at 205. But what do you expect from a weight class that allowed a karate guy [Lyoto Machida] to be champion?"

Obviously, Sonnen is among one of the many who actually would like to see Jones faces Evans in the future, but for now his mind is staying in the 185-lb. division, where he hopes that a win in his return bout will result in a potential rematch with UFC Middleweight Champion.

Speaking of the champ, he might be across the cage from current UFC Welterweight Champion and UFC 129 headliner Georges "Rush" St-Pierre by the time Sonnen gets back in line, but Sonnen--who recently traveled to the Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy to help Jake Shields for his UFC 129 bout with the Welterweight Champion--believes that GSP might need the superfight once his bout with Shields is over and done with come April 30th.

"GSP is going to need the shot," he said. "GSP is going to lose his welterweight championship in T-minus 20 days to Jake Shields. So I hope GSP does get the shot. It's going to be the only way he'll get a championship, because he's not going to have one after Jake Shields is in that weight.

Sonnen created another soundbyte for us all to quote him on by boldly saying that GSP will need the dream-fight with Silva just to give himself another crack at a major MMA title because after seeing what he saw while training with Shields, there's little doubt in Sonnen's mind that Shields has a better chance to become the new Welterweight Champion than what many are giving him.

King Georges has but 25 minutes to prove Uncle Chael wrong come April 30th.

Regardless of whether he does beat Shields or not, don't expect Sonnen to keep quiet about it.
