Kemba Walker Following in Maya Moore's Draft Footsteps
There have rarely been times in college sports history when both the men’s and the women’s basketball programs of a school have had players ranked number one in the country.
Maya Moore is the more undisputed number one, while many would argue that Kemba Walker’s performance in the Big East Tournament and the NCAA Tournament does not show enough for him to deserve that ranking.
In any event, both players were at the top of their games this past season of NCAA basketball and Moore put the lid on her college career this afternoon, as she was drafted to the Minnesota Lynx WNBA team as the number one overall pick in the Women’s Draft. Will Walker be so lucky?
There is not such an easy line of dominance when it comes to this year’s NBA draft as there is in the WNBA. Not to take anything away from the elite women’s league, because I feel like the players drafted today could play with the greatest men basketball players.
However, Moore was such an ideal women’s athlete that there was an established space between herself and the players surrounding her.
It is speculated that Walker will be entering the NBA draft this year after such an incredible run towards the end of his college season. He is graduating from the University of Connecticut, so it seems very likely that this rumor is true.
How high will Kemba Walker be drafted? That is a question that will be evaluated as the NBA draft nears. A player like Kyrie Irving threatens Walker’s position on the draft board simply because of how elite analysts regard Irving and how shaky spectators feel that Walker could be at a professional level. His size presents a problem and his performances on the perimeter need to be refined if he expects to start at the next stage of his basketball career.
Walker is going to be great in the NBA, but only if he allows himself the training to do so. He is not one of the most NBA-ready players in this year’s draft, but he has the potential to grow into something spectacular.
