Nick Diaz, Paul Daley and the 25 Best Trash Talkers in MMA (with Video)
Whether you like it or not, trash talkers help fuel fights in MMA. Nothing says hyping up a fight like calling out your opponent by saying how you'll knock them out.
Sometimes the fighters back up the talk, sometimes they don't, and sometimes they back away from the fight and still trash talk.
People love to watch the trash talkers fight. If someone talks trash the entire week and then gets knocked out in the first round, people are quick to jump on them.
If they talk trash the whole week and back it up, people go nuts over the fighter.
Well here they are, the 25 biggest trash talkers competing in MMA.
Nick Diaz
1 of 25Nick Diaz has the reputation no one can deny. The video is just the beginning of the war of words that has been spewed between him and fellow Strikeforce fighter, Jason "Mayhem" Miller.
Diaz is absolutely one the worst trash talkers in MMA and has been involved in two post-fight brawls. That's right not one, but two.
One with K.J. Noons and his father, and the other after his buddy Jake Shields won and Mayhem crashed their title party in the ring.
Diaz will talk all day about how he's overworked, overtrained and underpaid. Talk about how he's a great fighter and that's what gives him a spot on this list.
Don't be scared, homie!
Paul Daley
2 of 25Paul Daley has the nickname "Semtex" for a reason. For those of you who don't know what Semtex is, it's an explosive. A very powerful explosive.
Daley has great stand-up like almost every person that comes out of the United Kingdom. Daley has talked trash and even threw a cheap shot at one of his former opponents, Josh Koscheck.
Not only did he throw a cheap shot, he threw it in the midst of title contender elimination bout.
Who does that?
Frank Mir
3 of 25Back in the day, Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar had a feud for the ages. Both went back and forth after Mir caught Lesnar in a submission in their first fight.
Lesnar was a sore loser and of course attacked Mir, saying how much better he was then Mir.
Well, Mir responded and went at Lesnar. Mir hates Lesnar, and the feeling is mutual.
Mir ended up losing their follow-up fight, badly. The UFC 100 fight helped fuel the Lesnar hype train.
Tito Ortiz
4 of 25What can I say about Tito Ortiz? Well he has the nickname "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" for a reason.
His biggest most memorable feud is with Ken Shamrock. When they coached The Ultimate Fighter together, it was like all the pent-up frustration and anger all came out on the show.
If you watch the video, you'll see Shamrock talk about how he will kill Ortiz, and Ortiz just burst out laughing two seconds later. That pretty much epitomizes their relationship.
Not only has Ortiz talked trash about Shamrock, he has talked it about Chuck Liddell and also Josh Koscheck.
Not only those two, but he has also attacked Forrest Griffin after Griffin lost to middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
Ortiz wanted to make a shirt saying "Run, Forrest, Run" in reference to how Forrest ran away after his fight with Silva was over.
Ortiz is one of those guys who just likes to talk a lot and hear his own voice.
Someone should ask Ortiz when was the last time he won a fight. Maybe then he'll shut up for a little bit.
Quinton "Rampage" Jackson
5 of 25If you watched Season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter then you know about Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.
Not only did he attack fellow coach, Rashad Evans, but he also attacked one of Rashad's fighters, Darryl Schoonover and mercilessly berated him with insults the entire season until Darryl had enough and threatened to drop to light heavyweight to teach Rampage a lesson.
I know, I chuckled, too, when I heard that.
Rampage berated Evans, talking about his knockout loss to Machida that could only be described in one word: awesome.
Personally, I thought the picture of the entire Evans team on TUF was pretty funny. Too bad his team, and Kimbo Slice, couldn't win a fight to save their lives that season.
Chael Sonnen
6 of 25I feel like this whole slide could just be summed up with one thing, Chael Sonnen is a wanna-be politician. That's enough to tell you about how he likes to sling mud.
Sonnen viciously attacked Anderson Silva leading up to their title fight and still to this day will attack Silva even after his loss.
Sonnen just doesn't know when to shut his mouth. Yet he would be one of the best options to get under Michael Bisping's skin on The Ultimate Fighter.
Michael Bisping
7 of 25If you have a list like this, you have to include Michael Bisping. He complains about another fighter attacking him and blah, blah, but yet he goes out and trash talks himself.
Sure, he's not attacking anybody's family, but Bisping is like one of the worst trash talkers in recent MMA memory.
Dan Henderson said it best himself about his UFC 100 knockout of Bisping.
"I believe I [shut him up] for a little while, I don't know if he'll ever shut his mouth completely, though. Normally, I'm not that way in fights.
"I know if a guy is out. I tend to stop. I knew I hit him out. I think that last one was just to shut him up a little bit,"Henderson said in a post-fight interview.
Too bad he didn't shut him up for long.
Rashad Evans
8 of 25Rashad Evans got in Rampage's face all season long when they coached on TUF together.
Not only has he trash-talked Rampage, but he has referred to former training partner, Jon Jones, as "Judas" and has made claims towards his former coach, Greg Jackson.
Evans is used to it. After going through what he went through on Season 10 of TUF and taking every opportunity to undermine and attack Rampage, Evans has gained a lot in the trash talking area.
Brock Lesnar
9 of 25Brock Lesnar has become more of a company man in past interviews and hasn't really talked trash to anyone as of late.
But as mentioned in the Mir slide, these two hated each other with a passion. These two know how to get under each other's skins and well, they've fought twice inside the ring and have split the series, one apiece.
Mir getting under Lesnar's skin and Lesnar's sore loser attitude just combined for one mega outburst after his win at UFC 100.
Lesnar gave Mir a goal in life. Too bad Mir will probably never beat or face Lesnar again.
Josh Koscheck
10 of 25On top of his feud with Tito Ortiz, Josh Koscheck had a war of words leading up to his welterweight title fight with Georges St-Pierre.
Koscheck tried to get under GSP's skin the entire TUF season, but GSP did what he does best: just shrug it off.
Koscheck even did a good job of ticking off the entire city of Montreal. Not only did he announce to the Montreal crowd that he would beat their hometown favorite, GSP, but he also told them the Pittsburgh Penguins would beat their hometown Canadiens.
It's like Koscheck wanted to be hurt by the patrons of Montreal.
GSP ended up beating Koscheck and winning one for Montreal anyway.
Oh, and Montreal beat Pittsburgh in their playoff series 4-3 to spite Koscheck even further.
Matt Serra
11 of 25Going to school on Long Island, I hear a lot of people who talk a lot like Matt Serra. But no one on Long Island (or New York for that matter) trash talks like Serra.
Serra doesn't like Matt Hughes, and that was apparent throughout their little feud until their bout came and Serra had to pull out due to injury. Then they fought at UFC 98 where Hughes won via unanimous decision.
Here's just one quote to prove how much Serra hates Hughes:
"The thing is this, this sport you deal with a lot of guys in this sport and most of them are cool. It’s a rarity you find an a------ and I found one. I’m going to get paid to punch him in the mouth.
"I’m going to do to him what you should do to every bully and that’s not only in America but everywhere in the world. What should you do to a bully? You should punch him square in the mouth.
"I’m getting paid for it. So who’s got it better than me? I want to know.... I’m not an idiot. I’ll tell you I don’t like the guy because I don’t like the guy.
"But as a fighter, I know the problems he brings to the table and I know what I got to watch out for. I know where he’s really dangerous. What do you want me to say? He’s a swell guy and I can’t wait to fight him? F--- him," said Serra in an interview with Sherdog.
Dan Hardy
12 of 25Dan Hardy has cooled down lately because, well, he's lost three in a row and doesn't look all that great anymore.
His best moment as a trash talker came in the video here. Not only did he trash talk Georges St-Pierre, he imitated his voice in doing so.
Anybody who can do a pretty good GSP impression is all right in my book. Too bad though that he sounded more like Yoda than GSP.
In the words of GSP: "I'm not impressed by your performance."
B.J. Penn
13 of 25B.J. Penn can't seem to let one thing go. Much like fellow UFC fighter Frank Mir, Penn has been wrapped up in his loss to Georges St-Pierre more than anything else in life.
If you don't know about the Penn-GSP feud, GSP greased himself during the fight, making it harder for Penn to hold onto him and his punches glanced off easier. Well, that didn't go well with Penn.
To this day, Penn wants a rematch with GSP. Now that Penn is in the welterweight division, he seems poised to do so. But after his draw with Jon Fitch a little over a month ago, he's a little bit further away.
Penn will always be hawking GSP. It's one loss he can't shake.
Like a wise man once told me, GSP is like that extremely pretty girl that broke up with Penn because she was too good for him, and he can't get over it.
Yeah, that sounds about right.
Mohammad "King Mo" Lawal
14 of 25This video is just great. It's probably one of my favorite trash-talking moments in MMA. Mohammad "King Mo" Lawal did a lot to get under the skin of Gegard Mousasi.
One of those things was saying he sounded like Kermit the Frog.
Mousasi is a foreign fighter from the Netherlands, so his accent could lead some to believe that.
King Mo backed up his trash talk when he fought Mousasi at Strikeforce: Nashville where he won by unanimous decision.
Too bad King Mo couldn't defend the title. Oh well, he still won calling Mousasi, "Kermit the Frog".
Josh Barnett
15 of 25What can we say about Josh Barnett to keep this slide short and simple. Barnett is not well-liked by UFC president Dana White.
See, Barnett has been like the unofficial face of steroids in MMA. That's something that just doesn't sit well with White.
Barnett won the UFC heavyweight title over veteran Randy Couture by second round TKO at UFC 36. Since he tested positive for steroids at his championship bout, he hasn't returned to the UFC.
Now, he has come back to White now that Zuffa owns the promotion he works for, Strikeforce.
Brandon "The Truth" Vera
16 of 25See, that scuffle happened because Brandon Vera didn't believe the Jon Jones hype and, well, still doesn't.
Even after Jones literally broke Vera's face, he still had the nerve to say in an interview with the Las Vegas Sun:
“During the fight I remember thinking, ‘Man, really? All the hype was about this guy?’ I specifically remember saying to him in my head, ‘Man, you (expletive) suck.’ Right when the ‘k’ came out in my head, I got blasted.”
Not only that, but before the fight it was a little more believable when he said in an interview with UFC.com:
"If he [Jon Jones] believes what people are saying about him...that he’s the second coming of Jesus Christ, then he’s going to have a long way to fall back down to earth when I knock him out. We’ll see if he’s ready for ‘The Truth.’"
Looks like Jones had the last laugh.
Don Frye
17 of 25Don Frye hasn't competed in a MMA bout since 2009, yet I'm still including him on this list.
Why you may be asking me, well watch the video and just tell me he isn't hysterical. He's like your grandpa, you know, the one who isn't afraid to say what's on his mind because he's "70 and a grown man and can say whatever I want."
We all have a grandparent like that, come on. The way Frye just attacks Mohammad Lawal is just hysterical and there's plenty more if you just search Don Frye on YouTube.
Oh, Don Frye, please have more interviews.
Jason "Mayhem" Miller
18 of 25I could do an entire ten slide, slideshow on Jason "Mayhem" Miller and Nick Diaz, but I'll just do two for your sake.
Mayhem is what he is, a crazy guy who just says random stuff. Mayhem has called out Diaz for a while now wanting a fight with him at 185.
But Diaz won't go up and Mayhem won't go down to 170. So what's Mayhem suppose to do? Call out Diaz at every opportunity he gets by saying "Don't be scared, homie!"
Admit it, the t-shirt is pretty awesome. Mayhem has just trash talked him so much, he had to have a spot on this list.
Urijah Faber
19 of 25No one would expect it from little Urijah Faber to trash talk. Well to him, Dominick Cruz isn't cool enough.
Cruz said one reason he doesn't like Faber is because of all his YouTube videos. Well that's what I went out to get you, one of Faber's YouTube videos.
Faber has wanted this fight with Cruz for so long and will finally get it in July when the two square off for the bantamweight title.
It will be one of the most highly anticipated bantamweight title fights in recent memory.
Dominick Cruz
20 of 25Like it was said in the previous slide, Dominick Cruz just doesn't like Urijah Faber.
One huge reason is that Faber's face took over most of a poster Cruz was on when Cruz and Faber first squared off.
Since then Cruz has wanted a rematch with the only man to beat him and will get that shot come UFC 132 in July.
Maybe then Faber will stop with all the YouTube videos and Cruz can live in peace. Or if Faber wins, he will continue to do it and haunt Cruz's dreams.
Anderson Silva
21 of 25Anderson Silva doesn't really taunt in interviews or weigh-ins, no he doesn't. Where Silva does his trash talking is in the ring.
To me taunting is the equivalent of trash talking, they're the same thing no matter how you look at it.
Whether you take a look at the fight of Silva and Demian Maia or the fight between Silva and Forrest Griffin, Silva taunted his opponent. That's just disrespectful.
So disrespectful in fact that Dana White refused to put the strap around Silva's waist instead giving it to Silva's manager..
Silva has since stopped his antics and was tested heavily by Chael Sonnen.
I guess he learned his lesson.
Jorge Rivera
22 of 25This is the first and probably last time Jorge Rivera has a trash talking affair with someone. The video on this slide is just one of a few videos Rivera posted about his opponent, Michael Bisping.
You can search Jorge Rivera on YouTube for the other videos; believe me, you won't be disappointed.
The videos got so far under Bisping's skin that he threw an illegal knee, spit on Rivera's corner and created a scuffle at the weigh-ins.
Rivera created a monster in Bisping now. Everyone wants a shot at Bisping for his reactions during this war of words.
Bisping got the last laugh, though, beating Rivera in their match.
Sean McCorkle
23 of 25Even though he was cut from the UFC, Sean McCorkle is still technically competing in MMA.
McCorkle has done a nice job of calling out up-and-coming UFC heavyweight, Matt Mitrione, but we'll never see that now that McCorkle is out of the UFC.
Not to mention calling out Chael Sonnen, someone who is two weight classes lower then him. Oh, and he also called out his ex-wife.
McCorkle is just spewing hate all over.
Phil Baroni
24 of 25I am in love with the fact I finally get to put Phil Baroni on a slideshow.
Being from New York, you automatically gain an edge in trash talking. It's what you grow up with and learn.
That's why 90 percent of the United States hates fans of any New York teams. Even when our teams are garbage, we still say they're better than your team, even with a straight face.
Baroni is into himself and likes to talk himself up. He takes every advantage to do that and sometimes it's flat-out hysterical.
If you watch the video, that's pretty much the same thing in every Baroni interview.
Forrest Griffin
25 of 25Forrest Griffin doesn't really trash talk people. If anything he trash talks himself with his self-deprecating humor.
Griffin likes to poke fun at himself and likes to poke fun at others. He even suggested that the loser of the fight between him and Rich Franklin get a tattoo.
The only time Griffin has even trash talked someone un-humorously was his mini Twitter war with fellow light heavyweight, Tito Ortiz.
Griffin started it off by saying "I am the new tito, b---- about injuries after every fight win or lose, hold guys down as much as possible, never finish a fight. checkallboxs," Griffin said via his Twitter. Then of course Ortiz fired four shots in return of Griffin's insult.
Of course these two could always meet back in the ring, where Griffin previously beat Ortiz.
