Strikeforce: Gegard Mousasi Hard on Himself After Tough Draw with Keith Jardine

Sal DeRoseApr 10, 2011

Gegard Mousasi was predicted all week to dominate Keith Jardine, and by dominate I mean obliterate Jardine. All over the Internet you couldn't find one place that didn't have Mousasi winning by KO or TKO. It was Mousasi's fight to lose.

Well, he didn't and he didn't win either. Mousasi's illegal upkick to Jardine in the first round cost him a point and definitely the match. But his result doesn't disappoint him the most.

"I'm disappointed because a lot of people were expecting me to win," Mousasi said at the post-fight press conference. "I let them down."

Mousasi dominated Jardine in the stand-up game, like everyone predicted, but Jardine was more then successful in his takedowns of Mousasi. Jardine went full-out in a fight he took on nine days notice and a fight he wasn't predicted to even last through.

It wasn't the gimme fight for Mousasi everyone was saying it was.

"This kind of fight is tough because everybody says, 'Oh, you're going to win; you're going to win easy,'" Mousasi said. "Those are the fights that are the most dangerous. He has a lot of experience against top competition. People say I will just walk over him, but I know those are the fights [where] you have the most to lose."

To Mousasi though, there is no arguing the final decision to award the two warriors a draw.

"You can always argue about decisions, but I think the decision was good. He took it on short notice, not to take away from him. I have friends that know him. Everybody says he's a great guy. He put on a great performance," said Mousasi.

Now, contention for Strikeforce's light heavyweight title with newly crowned champion, Dan Henderson, seems a little more far off for the young, former champion, Mousasi.

"I'm not in the title [contention]. Maybe I'm not the best fighter, but I'm always going to fight, no matter who it is," Mousasi said. "I'm not going to get hurt; I'm coming to hurt them. Maybe I lose my fights because I don't fight smart."
