Michael Vick to Reach Out to Fellow Felon Plaxico Burress

Mark QueenApr 9, 2011

Newly reformed quarterback Michael Vick of the Philadelphia Eagles staged an epic comeback in the 2010 NFL season after serving time on felony dog fighting charges.

Now Vick wants to help another former NFL star make a similar transition from cellmate to productive teammate in 2011.

Several New York Giants players who want Plaxico Burress back often point toward Michael Vick's successful return from prison and say, why can’t Burress do the same?

Vick is saying the same thing, and the Eagles quarterback wants to talk to Burress once the receiver is released from prison in June. Both grew up in the vicinity of Virginia Beach, Va.

"I hope I can pay him a visit," Vick told the Philadelphia Daily News. “I just want to reach out to him, talk to him. We have a good relationship ... just congratulate him on getting through such a tough time, even though it's not the ideal situation, let him know there's plenty of optimism out there for him. I don't think his career's over by far. You look at Terrell Owens, he's 37, and playing like he's in his late 20s."

Several Giants, such as Brandon Jacobs, Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora, have said they want Burress back. Giants general manager Jerry Reese has said he will explore the possibility of a reunion when Burress is released.

Is Michael Vick in the right position, still in early reformation, to help another convict?

In my opinion, yes. While Michael did and helped support some horrific crimes against animals, and Burress' crime paled in comparison, their experience going from NFL stardom to prisoners is too similar not to help. While I feel Vick still has much to prove, offering help to Plaxico shows that he is still progressing positively as a man.
