Liverpool FC Eye £15m Winger Aaron Lennon from Spurs To Erase Wing Problems

Kaustav BoseApr 9, 2011

Just before Liverpool FC Director of Football Damien Comolli had taken over his earlier position at Tottenham Hotspur, Aaron Lennon, then 18 years old, was bought by Tottenham from Leeds United, spotted by the brilliant Frank Arnesen.

Known for his exceptional acceleration on the ball, the diminutive winger has since been one of the best wingers in the English Premier League and Damien Comolli surely took good notice of it. In fact, it was the same Lennon who proved to be the difference between the Reds and the Spurs when they took on each other this season at White Hart Lane.

With all the controversy surrounding Lennon after he was removed from the Tottenham squad only moments before the team started against Real Madrid at the Bernabeau, a lot of frustration from the player has come into the picture.

Liverpool FC, who are in extreme need of at least a winger, seem to be catching in on the moment. The Reds are reportedly keeping close tabs on how the Spurs management deal with the player and in case the repercussions of the incident lead any further, would be ready to bid for the player in the summer transfer window.

However, the Reds' interest in Lennon is not just a very new phenomenon. In fact, even under Rafael Benitez, Liverpool were very keen to get their man, but it was of no avail as Spurs went on to reward the England international with a new contract and he could not be lured away from the London outfit.

As things stand now, both Liverpool and Tottenham stand a very good chance of missing out on the Champions League spot this year with just a few games left in the season, and although the Spurs, with a game in hand, look favorites to get the only available Europa league spot from the league standings, the new project undertaken by the Reds may just be able to tempt the Spurs star to join the Merseyside outfit.

Also there have been worrying reports for the Spurs fans from the Spurs camp about the club's intention to let go of a few stars if they miss out on a Champions League spot. With interest in Gareth Bale and Van Der Vaart from a few big clubs around, the Spurs manager could well sell Aaron Lennon to cut the costs and keep the Welsh and Dutch wizards who have been extremely instrumental for the wonder run of the Spurs both the Premier League and in the Champions League.

Aaron Lennon, who is just 23, fits in easily into the invest-in-youth strategy highlighted by John Henry and Co. He has so far played more than 165 matches for the Spurs and has scored 18 goals in the process. However, the biggest problem in the buy could be the price tag that Tottenham put on the player (keeping in mind that the English stars are anyways overpriced in the transfer window), who has in recent times has shown proneness  to injuries.
