UFC: Shane Carwin Returns to Fight Newcomer Jon Einemo at UFC 131

Eric WardenApr 7, 2011

The long awaited return of Shane Carwin is rumored to be at UFC 131, June 11, at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada.

Carwin (12-1) will be facing UFC newcomer Jon Olav Einemo (6-1).

Einemo is an excellent Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) practitioner. In 2003, while competing in submission wrestling, he won the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) tournament. He also served Roger Gracie his only loss in the ADCC.

When Einemo faces Carwin, he will be presented with a significant challenge in getting the fight to the mat. Carwin is a tremendous wrestler, with incredible takedown defense.

In the first round of his fight with Brock Lesnar, he easily avoided the takedown, executing a text-book whizzer.

If Carwin is able to keep this fight standing, Einemo could find himself in great peril. Carwin has immense power in his hands, boasting seven first-round knockouts. The man is explosive, and looks to finish fights early with all 12 wins coming in round one.

Einemo may surprise some fans at UFC 131.

Although he is relatively inexperienced, he did have a three-round battle with Fabricio Werdum. Einemo lost by unanimous decision, but the bout afforded him the experience of fighting a top contender.

Fans may also find his stand-up surprising.

He is training with Team Golden Glory, home to nearly 30 of the world's top full contact fighters. Most notably, they have produced the devastating strikers Alistair Overeem and Sergei Kharitonov.

Although his striking may be better than anticipated, Einemo will likely stick to grappling.

Even if Einemo can take the fight to the ground, he may not be out of trouble. Carwin fights at over 265 pounds, has a purple belt in BJJ and is credited with five submission victories (one due to strikes).

Both fighters may experience ring-rust when they meet at UFC 131.

Carwin is coming off neck and back surgery. He has not set foot in the octagon since suffering his first and only loss to Lesnar on July 3, 2010.

As for Einemo, he has not fought professionally since 2006.

The bout will satiate those fans craving Carwin, as well as allow them to get a look at a new UFC talent.
