Why Aren't We Talking About Gina Carano vs. Cyborg Santos?

Mike LeanzaOct 6, 2008

Alright, I think by now we all know about Kimbo getting wrecked by Seth Petruzelli. Was anyone really that shocked? Wait, let me rephrase. Was any educated MMA fan really that shocked that an internet sensation's 15 minutes of fame ended in less than 15 seconds?

Seriously, why is it that I've seen like 50 articles on this topic on BR alone, and all are saying the same thing. Also, why is nobody talking about the potential showdown between two of the best female fighters in the world facing off for the vacant Elite XC womens championship?

Last Saturday the two best fights of the night did not include one single guy. One of them wasn't even aired. Cyborg Santos' overall man handling, sorry, woman handling of Yoko Takahashi was "fight of the night" in my opinion. Yoko showed amazing heart and never said die. It may have been a lopsided victory, with one judge scoring it 30-26, but it was a great fight none-the-less.

While Cyborg showed why she may be the woman to beat Gina Carano, Gina was showing why she is still the face of women's MMA. A very feisty Kelly Kobald gave her all, even winning a round in the eyes of one judge, but her best was not enough to dethrone the queen.

Both women showed fantastic chins. How surprised were you when you had to wait until the end of the 3rd round to see Gina start using her patented push kick. I still find it amazing that even after trading punches for nine minutes, (may I ask why we could have seen 15 minutes of Kimbo, but we can't see 15 minutes of Carano?) Gina looked nothing short of fantastic.

Honestly, Kelly looked like she got hit by a 90 mph fastball, while Gina looked like she did when she first entered into the cage.

This sets up a fight that, if Elite XC wasn't being run by absolute idiots suckling at the power teet of Kimbo Slice, should be hyped up as the main event of the next Elite XC on CBS show.

After watching Kimbo Slice get knocked out in 14 seconds, by a guy that only hardcore MMA fans know about, does anyone really want to watch this sham of a fighter fight again? I will say this right now and I'm not joking at all.

If I hear that Kimbo Slice is fighting in the main event of the next CBS show, I will officially boycott this disgrace of an organization.

There are only three fights that I want to see that only Elite XC can put together. KJ Noons vs. Nick Diaz 2, Frank Shamrock vs. Tito Ortiz 2, and Gina Carano vs. Cyborg Santos in a match that I hope will be five 5-minute rounds. Hopefully, these fights take place before Elite XC goes out of business. HAHA.

Sorry, I just find it funny that a company millions of dollars in debt paid a talentless and unproven fighter $500,000, and would have given him 100,000 more had he won.

But I digress. Lets look at the match-up. Gina Carano is probably the only known woman fighter in the world to novice fans. This American Gladiator is 7-0 with three TKO/KO victories, one submission and three unanimous decisions to her credit.

The face of women's MMA is a very powerful Muay Thai fighter who is the only fighter I've seen really utilize push kicks. If only this girl could make weight. Tisk tisk.

Cristiane "Cybrog" Santos is 6-1 and hasn't lost since her professional debut back in 2005. She also specializes in Muay Thai and has stopped 4 of her 6 career fights. She is the same height as Gina at 5'8 and is married to Evangelista Santos (see my article on scariest looking fighters to see this guy).

Her and her husband both share the same nickname, but if you were to compare the records of these two, you'd think Cristiane would beat her husbands ass with relative ease.

Before Elite XC Heat, I mentioned in a comment on an article here, that there is probably only one fighter in Elite XC that could beat Gina. That woman, was Cyborg Santos. After watching her fight on Saturday, I stand by my assumption. If you are looking for me to pick a winner, as much as I really don't want to, I'll do it for the readers.

For those that saw Gina's fight against Kaitlin Young, you saw "Conviction" really out of shape, and pretty unimpressive. Yet she annihilated the 4-1 KO queen and left Kaitlin, in six minutes, looking like she just got mugged in Camden, New Jersey.

Many blamed the lackluster showing on Gina's commitment to "American Gladiators", and those people were right. With Gladiator tapings over, for now, Gina was able to rededicate herself to MMA, and it really showed in her fight against Kobald. Her career opponents record stands at a staggering 47-21-1.

She is the only woman to defeat Rosi Sexton, and she did so by TKO in only her second professional fight. Adding Cyborg to the list would make the record 53-22-1.

Cyborg is known for her ability to stop opponents and force the corners of her opponents to throw in the towel. But if we look at the records of her opponents, we see a pretty unimpressive history.

She has fought four MMA newcomers, in her career, losing to one of them. She may have looked phenomenal, but Yoko Takahashi isn't the best out there. Looking at the combined record of Cyborgs opponents, it is nowhere close to what Gina has had to deal with. 30-21 including two opponents that debuted against her, and haven't fought since.

Her only real challenge was against 7-3 submission specialist Vanessa Porto, who she defeated by decision. Her record shows an unimpressive trend, yes Cyborg has four TKO/KO victories, but only one was against a proven veteran.

You can probably guess who I'm taking in this fight. As much as I don't want to look like an ignorant little fanboy, I have to take Gina Carano. Gina has proven herself against some of the best in women's MMA, while Cyborg has looked dominant only against, at best, average fighters.

I don't see Gina stopping Cyborg, but I also can't see Santos defeating Gina on judges scorecards.

This fight has all the makings of a fight of the year candidate. It will be by far the most exciting and important fight in all of womens MMA. This fight would crown the first Elite XC womens champion and even though any title with Elite XC's name encrusted on it is probably worthless, I give this title all the credibility in the world.
