UFC: Diego Sanchez Is Against Smoking Weed Now, Joe Rogan Chimes in
When UFC welterweight contender Diego Sanchez was still known by fans as “The Nightmare,” he certainly seemed like a guy who knew how to party.
Any questions about what Sanchez liked to do in his free time were answered after he failed a drug test post-UFC Fight Night, where he knocked out Joe Riggs.
Sanchez did not fail for steroids, painkillers, cocaine or anything that could be considered a “hard” drug.
Instead, Sanchez tested positive for marijuana. Of course, that was back in 2006, and a lot has changed since then for the Albuquerque, New Mexico native.
After a lightweight title run fell short at the heavy hands of BJ Penn, Sanchez moved back up to welterweight.
The Nightmare’s return to welterweight was not a successful one, losing to John Hathaway at UFC 114.
However, since then Sanchez has rattled off consecutive wins against Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann.
His performance against Kampmann was particularly gutsy, considering how bloody and battered Sanchez was at the end of the fight.
What was Sanchez’s explanation for his return to prominence as a welterweight?
He found God.
In between his fights with Thiago and Kampmann, The Nightmare announced that he would be changing his nickname to “The Dream” to show that he is all in regarding his commitment to being a born again Christian.
Sanchez, who has been big on Twitter since his fight with Kampmann, is trying to spread the word of the Lord via this social medium now.
At the end of March, Sanchez tweeted: “How many of you love to smoke weed I did for a long time. Check out this link: http://www.aggressivechristianity.net/articles/maryjane.htm”
For those who do not want to take the time to read the fairly lengthy article, the main idea is quite clear after reading the first sentence on the webpage.
“THROUGH THE INNOCENTLY APPEARING GUISE OF THE 'NATURAL HERBAL HIGH' CALLED MARIJUANA, SATAN HAS FOUND AN OPEN DOORWAY FOR INVASION INTO THE MINDS OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE.”
Guess it’s safe to say that Sanchez does not partake in the “devil’s lettuce” anymore and that he is 100 percent serious about living a holy lifestyle.
Funny enough, UFC commentator Joe Rogan immediately called out Sanchez about the legitimacy of the link he posted.
Cleaning up the back and forth between their Twitter feeds, the interaction reads like this:
Joe: that article reads like it was made by a 5 year old chimp
Diego: I'm not a expert I'm just putting it out there. Like I said even if one person gets help from it I helped someone.
Joe: Genesis 1:12 I have given all seed bearing plants to use. Still remember that from Cypress Hill tape. Smoke bud.
Diego: you might be right I don't use Stevia much anymore
Joe: weed is nature and nature is perfect. Weed is here to connect us to the universe.
Talk about coming from opposite ends of the spectrum.
Getting back to fighting, Kampmann has called out Sanchez for a rematch, while Johny Hendricks has also said he wants a piece of The Dream.
Both fighters called out Sanchez on Twitter and both fights are pretty unlikely for the next time Sanchez steps into the cage.
Many fans would agree that a match up against the likes of a Carlos Condit or a Josh Koscheck would be a much more likely choice for the Greg Jackson team member’s next outing.
