Undertaker's Wrestlemania Streak: Why It's a Crutch to WWE

Ricky MarteApr 5, 2011

Since honestly is the best policy, I'll start out by letting everyone know that I didn't really care much for any of the matches on the Wrestlemania 27 card before Taker vs. HHH. I had some interest in seeing Del Rio beat Edge, but in all sincerity I didn't believe it would happen.

I put down everything else I was doing and watched this match with the streak on the line. I was not at all disappointed by the match. In fact, I thought it was great.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but generally speaking the consensus was that this match was rushed, that both superstars were not fully back yet from injury, and that the "no holds barred" stipulation was thrown in there to hide the deficiencies from each wrestler. After watching the match, there was only one thing that disappointed me: watching the streak continue.

My disappointment with the streak continuing has nothing at all to do with the streak itself. It has to do with the Undertaker. Aside from a decent spot or two, Triple H totally carried this match. From start to finish. The match went just under thirty minutes, and for the majority of that time, what I saw was a fresh Triple H beating the pulp out of a tired, old Undertaker.

The Undertaker has always been known for his theatrics, and his way of always staying in control of a match. He always physically dominated, and when he didn't he would go down hard, and sit up, and it was like he had regained the energy for the whole match.

This match was different. He didn't physically dominate. When he tried to sit up and grab Hunter by the throat, Triple H defiantly swatted away Undertaker's hand, and continued his dominance. After Triple H dominated the entire match, he taps out to the Hell's Gate submission maneuver. Why? Because the streak needed to continue.

In this match, the better man didn't win. This may be my own opinion, but I think it may just be time for Taker to go. I love him just as much as the next guy, but I can't fathom watching him put on another performance like that at Wrestlemania 28, and narrowly defeat a more deserving superstar just because the streak needs to continue.

At the end of the match, Triple H kept asking The Undertaker why he wouldn't just stay down and die. After watching the match, I'm asking the same thing.
