Cam Newton: Auburn QB Not Invited to Dallas Cowboys' Pro Day

Rob BrownApr 5, 2011

Dallas will have at least 30 prospects visit Valley Ranch within the next two days as a part of their national visits.

None of them are named Cam Newton.

Ever since Newton spoke with Cowboys officials at the combine, rumors and speculation went crazy that Dallas was going to use their ninth overall draft pick on the Auburn quarterback.

Hopefully this puts those rumors to rest.

Dallas has a Pro Bowl quarterback in Tony Romo and the red flags that Newton carries aren’t worth jeopardizing the window of opportunity that the Cowboys have to win the Super Bowl.

Jerry Jones repeatedly praised the young quarterback, but it all seems to have been a smokescreen at this point. If the ‘Boys were truly interested in Newton, then he’d be invited to Dallas Day for a closer look.

Instead, the Cowboys invited players like USC tackle Tyron Smith, Florida center Mike Pouncey and TCU cornerback Jason Teague, among others.

It is possible that if Newton drops to the ninth pick in the draft, the Cowboys will look to trade down and pick up some extra picks to fill other needs. Jones has already expressed that teams have called to inquire about a possible trade.

That would only be smart if Tyron Smith was still available at the time as well. Jason Garrett has only made one visit to a pro day, and that was to USC (I’m sure you can connect the dots from there).

The smokescreen tactic is used to lift a player’s draft stock (in this case Newton), so that other teams are tempted to jump up the boards to grab him. Letting other players (like USC’s Tyron Smith or Nebraska’s Prince Amukamara) drop a spot lower in the draft.

With the ninth pick, Dallas will concentrate on a need and a starter in 2011. Tony Romo will start, Jon Kitna is his reliable veteran backup and Stephen McGee is being groomed. No room for a ninth overall picked quarterback.

Tackle, cornerback, defensive line and other key positions will be concentrated on in this month’s draft.

So for all of you who were hoping to see Newton in a Cowboys uniform—you can always just trade for him in your Madden 2012 video game.
