NFL Week Five Recap: Dolphins Stun Chargers

Football ManiaxsOct 5, 2008

Kansas City @ Carolina: Kansas City’s victory over Denver last weekend was a fluke. Their defense was destroyed by Jake Delhome’s passing game. Delhomme had 236 yards passing with two touchdowns and an interception, but that interception didn’t appear to be much more than that.

DeAngelo Williams (whom we had him in our Fantasy Breakout list ) had the biggest day for the Panthers, scoring three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving. He now has 324 rushing yards on the young season splitting work with Stewart.

He had 123 yards on the ground and 25 receiving. Rookie Jonathan Stewart was a non-factor, but he did rush for 72 yards, mostly during mop-up time. Steve Smith neared the 100-yard receiving mark with 96 on six catches and Muhsin Muhammad connected on three catches for 71 yards and a score.

The Chiefs rushed for 35 total yards on the day, doing it with three different runners, and had only 123 yards receiving. Rookie Jamaal Charles led Chiefs' RBs with 18 rushing yards, followed by QB Tyler Thigpen's 16, and Larry Johnson's two!

Dwayne Bowe led the Chief wide receivers with 57 yards. The Chiefs, according to Herm Edwards, are in rebuilding mode. It was obvious today as the Chiefs were dominated on both sides of the ball.

Kansas City 0 – Carolina 34

Indianapolis @ Houston: Talk about heartbreak. The Houston Texans have found a new way to lose. With four minutes left in the game, the Houston Texans blew a 17-point lead. Sage Rosenfels had a decent day filling in for a sick Matt Schaub. He passed for 246 yards and a touchdown, but it was his late fumbles that cost them the game.

Steve Slaton continues to make a case for offensive rookie of the year, with 93 yards rushing and two touchdowns by taking advantage, as predicted, of a weak Colts' run defense. Veteran Ahman Green made his season debut going for 47 yards in relief. Wide Receiver Andre Johnson was his usual self, as his nine catches for 131 yards and a TD attest.

Peyton Manning broke out of a minor slump, passing for 247 yards and two touchdowns, but it was Reggie Wayne who had the go-ahead touchdown on an acrobatic catch. He also had 97 yards receiving. The Colts staged a phenomenal comeback, as customary vs. the Texans in the final minutes of the fourth quarter when they scored three TDs in little less than four minutes.

The Indy defense ran a touchdown back for a touchdown while giving up over 300 yards of total offense. Dwight Freeney had a slight limp at the end of the game, but it looks to be a strain.

Indianapolis 31 – Houston 27

Washington @ Philadelphia: This game is proof that the NFC East is brutal. These two teams played smash-mouth football for four quarters. Brian Westbrook came back from an injury and rushed for 33 yards and a touchdown while Reggie Brown caught four passes for 84 yards.

The Redskins used some trickery to help beat the Eagles. Wideout Antwaan Randle-El passed for a touchdown to Chris Cooley, but it was Clinton Portis who stole the show running all over the Eagles defense for 145 yards and a touchdown. The Eagles dropped a tough one, but this may be a sign of an emerging power in the East.

Washington is bouncing back from an unimpressive season opener, and Jason Campbell is coming into his own as quarterback. He passed for 176 yards, and didn’t account for any turnovers. Chris Cooley led the team in receiving yards with 109 on eight receptions and a TD, while Santana Moss produced zero stats on an unusual day. The only (12-yard) catch he had on the day was called back on an interference foul call.

Washington 23 – Philadelphia 17

Tennessee @ Baltimore: This was the classic defensive battle, but it was Tennessee who found a way to win and remain undefeated (5-0), keeping pace with the World Champion N.Y. Giants. TE Alge Crumpler had a late touchdown catch to seal the win. Kerry Collins, who is seeking a contract extension before the end of the season, had a touchdown and two picks. Chris Johnson and LenDale White were held in check by a smothering defense and rushed for a total of 44 yards on the day.

The Ravens fared better on the ground rushing for 132 total yards. Joe Flacco still hasn’t passed for over 200 yards this season, as he threw two interceptions. Le’Ron McClain had another touchdown on 51 yards.

Willis McGahee returned to the lineup and rushed for 64 yards. There weren’t many good things to harp on in this game other than the fact that the Ravens have a good defense.
