ACC Week 6 Wrap Up
Georgia Tech shuts out Duke with a strong second half. Miami and FSU play a classic in a monsoon. And Maryland does not show up against Virginia.
Florida State 41, Miami 39
Scientists are still trying to figure what exactly FSU is using to win these games, but they are calling it a running game, which is a foreign term in Tallahassee. Antone Smith rushed for four TDs, including the game clincher to lead FSU to their third win in the last four games against Miami. FSU was blowing Miami out 24-3 at half, but the Canes rallied to within two in the fourth quarter.
I was surprised by how poorly the defenses played in this one, especially tackling. FSU has some momentum now, and it looks like Christian Ponder will assume the main QB role. Meanwhile, Miami needs to find a game where they can put it all together. Lots of talent, but too many mental breakdowns.
My Prediction: FSU Covers, Miami Wins
Georgia Tech 27, Duke 0
The Yellow Jackets led just 3-0 at the half, but used 230 yards of passing, all to Demaryius Thomas, to blow the Blue Devils out in the second half.
The notion on Paul Johnson teams is that they cannot or will not pass, but Saturday should have changed a few minds. Duke was not able to accomplish much on offense and was held to just 132 yards total. Duke never got past the Georgia Tech 21-yard line.
Georgia Tech is coming around a lot faster than I expected and should be 5-1 heading into an ACC showdown with Clemson on October 18. Duke was brought back to Earth after starting out 3-1.
My Prediction: Georgia Tech Covers, Wins
Boston College 38, NC State 31
BC QB Chris Crane accounted for all five TDs, including the game-winning scamper as the Eagles took down NC State on the road. Boston College defeated their former coach Tom O'Brien for the second year in a row. The win vaults BC back into the mix in the Atlantic division.
Virginia Tech 27, Western Kentucky 13
The Hokies have found a tailback in Darren Evans who rushed for two TDs in the win over the Hilltoppers. QB Tyrod Taylor is settling into the QB position with two solid starts in a row. The Hokies led this one 27-3 before a WKU comeback in the second half.
Virginia 31, Maryland 0
Who saw this one coming? The Cavaliers were left for dead after last week's thumping by Duke, but Al Groh rallied his troops for the improbable win over a hot Maryland team. The Terps had won three in a row after a tough start to the year, and most thought they would roll over Virginia.
North Carolina 38, UConn 12
The lights went out in Kenan Stadium for a little and the Tar Heels special teams put the knockout punch to the ranked Huskies. Bruce Carter blocked three punts, and Marvin Austin added a defensive touchdown to cap off a wonderful night for the UNC defense. QB Cam Sexton is settling in as the starter and is providing solid play while starter TJ Yates is on the mend.
Last Week: 5-0 ATS, 4-1 SU
Season: 18-5-1 ATS, 16-8 SU
