Joe Stevenson to Make His 145-Pound Debut at UFC on Versus 4?

Dale De SouzaApr 4, 2011

"Daddy" might be making a pretty major move, kids.

The TUF 2 welterweight winner and former UFC lightweight title contender who had himself a memorable battle with B.J. Penn, Joe Stevenson, has opted to take a much different approach to his net fight following a loss to Danny Castillo at the UFC's last "Live on Versus" event.

MMA Weekly reports that Stevenson has not only decided to make the drop to 145, but he's already signed on for a date with Javier Vazquez at the next UFC on Versus event.

Now 8-7-0 in the UFC as a lightweight, Stevenson hopes his well-known jiu-jitsu and stand-up arsenal will be more enhanced than hindered by the drop, but Vazquez is far from an "easy fight."

Then again, no fight in mixed martial arts is truly an "easy fight," especially when you have to walk to a cage to compete in it, but I digress.

Vazquez has finished nine fights by submission and four by form of decision, with all of his five losses coming also by form of decisions.

Vazquez has never tapped out or been stopped in a fight, nor has he ever knocked anyone else out, but recent history will show that even the best submission artists can earn stoppages by strikes.

Stevenson is in a must-win situation here, and the fact of Vazquez being a second-degree BJJ black belt doesn't provide much comfort.

Expect this fight to be the toughest test of both men's career, as Stevenson has to contend with a high-level Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner, and Vazquez has to deal with a gritty veteran with an excruciating guillotine choke.

This one has all the makings of a solid ground clinic and possibly a Fight of the Night contender.
