Fabricio Werdum Aiming to Avenge UFC 90 Loss to Junior dos Santos
"Emelianenko Slayer," Fabricio Werdum, wants to get back his loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC 90. His plan to avenge it? Win the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.
Over the course of his career, Werdum has beaten big name fighters in a few different promotions. Werdum has beaten fighters like Alistair Overeem, Fedor Emelianenko and the most recent "Emelianenko Slayer," Antonio Silva.
The one loss that has stuck out to him though, his loss to dos Santos.
"That time Cigano defeated me it was the first time I was knocked out, I wasn’t excepting it, then I had that discussion with UFC, it wasn’t that we argued, but I was upset for losing the way it happened. I had been defeated before, but on a judge’s decision, this was the only time I was knocked out."
"So I wasn’t on a good state of mind because I had been defeated, I was far from my family. I’m not saying Cigano didn’t deserve it, because then he went there and kept winning. I’d be surprised if he had beaten me down and then lost. He went there and proved himself to be pretty good. I want to win this GP, to earn a belt, because I’ve never won one, and fight UFC’s champion. If it’s Cigano, It’d be a dream coming true. To do this unifier fight and against Cigano, a rematch, it’d be perfect," Werdum said in an interview with Tatame.com.
UFC president, Dana White, hasn't said that a merger between the UFC and Strikeforce would happen after the UFC's parent company, Zuffa, bought the Strikeforce promotion for an undisclosed amount.
A unification bout between these two could happen, much like the UFC did after the purchase and merger with Pride.
Werdum's loss to dos Santos was his last fight in the UFC and came by first-round knockout. Since then Werdum has made a name for himself as a top heavyweight in the world and is on a three-fight winning streak.
