WWE News: WWE Planning Name Change; Wrestling to Be Removed from Name

Gone Baby GoneApr 1, 2011

Wrestlingnewssource.com, is reporting that WWE had a planning meeting on Thursday, discussing potentially removing wrestling from their name. According to the article, the change will not be drastic, as the company would simply be called WWE.

Currently, the company goes by both WWE and World Wrestling Entertainment. One can only imagine this change has to do with wanting to have more mainstream acceptance. This tidbit is not completely surprising as recently reported, a WWE publicist asked that they no longer be referred to as a wrestling company.

The publicist spoke of the WWE's different properties, including a movie studio, magazine publishing and consumer distribution (a.k.a toy sales), making them an entertainment company. Yes, it's true that the WWE is more than wrestling, but without the wrestling end none of the other properties exist.

Maybe the WWE should split the company into two entities, one will be ran as a wrestling company, while the other handles the entertainment end.

It should also be noted that the WWE Corporate site has changed the logo, you can see it here. No longer calling themselves World Wrestling Entertainment, now simply called WWE.

So it appears that the name change process is already happening.

One has to wonder, if the WWE will just be called WWE for the corporate end (ie: stocks, letter-head, contracts and overall business purposes), or will they attempt to force the "WWE Universe" to stop calling them World Wrestling Entertainment?

So here is the million-dollar question: How can a non-wrestling company have an annual pay-per-view called WrestleMania?
