Maria Sharapova Makes Her Way to the Sony Ericsson Open Final

Lauren LynchApr 1, 2011

No. 16 seed Maria Sharapova gave Miami something to scream about today when she dominated the court 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.

No. 14 seed Andrea Petkovic did not have a chance once Sharapova stepped up in the second set.

Sharapova and Petkovic most recently squared off at the Australian Open, where Petkovic beat her. Regarding today’s match, Sharapova said, “Yeah, I didn't have a good result against her in Australia, so, yeah, I'm looking forward to it. It's the semifinal. She's playing really good tennis. Yeah, I'll have to definitely raise my level.”

Petkovic gave Sharapova a serious scare in the first set, but the seasoned Russian dominated the second and third sets, not giving the German anything to dance about until she was up 5-0 in the third set.

Petkovic made a run for a comeback, but fell flat with several errors and mis-hits. Of the game, Petkovic previously said, “When she has a good day, it's tough to push your game plan through. But I'm definitely gonna try. That's what I'm gonna do, and do anything to beat her. That's all I can do.”

Sharapova will meet the likes of third seed Vera Zvonareva or eighth seed Victoria Azarenka.

Rumor has it that the "Petko Dance" will live on through Novak Djokovic. Petkovic said, "I hope so. He told me he was going to do it. I saw him in Indian Wells doing like some kind of it, but this was not really the Petko Dance. So I really hope he steps up his game. Yeah, Petko Dance from Petko is retired. I don't know if any other players will try to involve them in their games. I would be very happy to see it."
