Introducing the Lightest Cleat in Football: The Adidas AdiZero 5-Star Cleat

Matt MillerMar 31, 2011

Adidas' revolutionary 6.9 oz. adiZero 5-star cleat hits stores tomorrow. Bleacher Report has the inside scoop on the lightest cleat in the world, and how you can win a cleat signed by Buffalo Bill C.J. Spiller.

"The Lightest Cleat in Football"

That's quite a statement for legendary shoe company Adidas to make. But they are also backing it up with science, technology and player feedback that proves Adidas has created something spectacular.

Anyone can claim they have the lightest shoe ever, but will players actually wear the shoe? Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller, along with the top high school football players in the country at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, debuted the adiZero 5-Star in early January to rousing results.

Upon walking into the equipment room, players were "thrown a pair of shoes," according to Jeff McGillis, Category Manager for Adidas Football. "The players had a shocked look on their faces when they caught the shoes and realized how light they are. The guys were referring to them as 'house shoes' because they are so light."

The shoes aren't just light, they work.

At the 2011 NFL combine, five players demoed the cleats during workouts. Prince Amukamara, Kyle Rudolph, Titus Young, DeMarco Murray and Jerrel Jernigan all wore the cleats as they tore up the track in Indianapolis. In fact, the NFL prospects in Indianapolis who ran the fastest 40-yard dash times at each position, all wore the lightweight cleat.

How did Adidas pull this off though? What did they do to make the adiZero a full three ounces lighter than the competition?

The adiZero 5-Star features a revolutionary single-layer synthetic upper called SPRINTSKIN and a sprint frame base, which significantly reduces the weight of the shoe while providing the perfect balance between lightweight construction and increased support.

Internal TPU support bands offer increased stability for quick cuts and changes of direction on the field. New triangular-shaped cleats provide players with maximum acceleration and traction. The newly-shaped cleats will also prevent players' feet from getting stuck in the turf, which will in turn limit injuries.

The fine people at Adidas already have one fan, in Bills running back C.J. Spiller.

“The adiZero 5-Star is the lightest cleat I’ve ever worn and no doubt it makes me faster on the field,” said Spiller. “The adiZero 5-Star is so light that it feels like I’m not even wearing a cleat. It gives me the support I need to make quick cuts and start and stop on a dime on any playing surface.”

Spiller loves the cleats so much he has autographed a pair that we're happy to give away on the Bleacher Report Twitter feed during the shoe's launch on Friday, April 1st.

The adiZero 5-Star will be available for $100 in 15 colors at EastBay, Dick’s Sporting Goods, www.shopadidas.com and Adidas team dealers. Football players and fans can visit www.facebook.com/adidasfootballUS for more information.
