For as long as I can remember sports writers long and far have been giving their feedback on some of the greatest golfers in history to never win a PGA major. Up until Phil Mickelson won his first major he was often the head of this class. But given recent history it may be more appropriate to look at some of the best golfers who have never won any PGA event.
This debate first sprang to mind over the past weekend when Steve Marino was once again in a position where he could have potentially won his first PGA event. Once again Marino could not get the victory.
In PGA events it seems as though golfers need to put together three strong rounds: In most cases either the first, second and third round to build up an insurmountable lead, or the second, third and final round to potentially run away with the victory.
Around golf circles it may appear as though Steve Marino is starting to take on the "lovable loser" tag that no one wants.
So the debate is: Who are some of the best golfers to never have won a PGA event?
Steve Marino: He has come so close on a number of occasions. This season alone he has played in seven events, making five cuts. Of the five cuts he made he has three top 10 finishes to show for it, which includes two events where he was runner up. Mark my words before the 2011 season ends: Marino will have his first victory on tour.
Briny Baird: Baird has made the cut on two-hundred nineteen career events. In eighty-four of them, over one-third of the time, he finished in the top 25. Admittedly Baird has struggled this season, only making the cut in one event he played, but it is only a matter of time before Briny gets his first win.
Ricky Barnes: He has played in eighty events while making the cut in forty-four of them. Fourteen times he was in the top 25 at the end of the event, including a runner up and third-place finish. Given more time he could be a player to be reckoned with.
There are a number of other golfers out there with skill and talent who have yet to win on the PGA tour, but these three are golfers I believe with soon remove themselves from this conversation by winning a PGA tour event in 2011.
Whether they simply change something in their game or ask veterans like Duval and Mickelson for golf swing tips regarding certain golf courses, they will eventually put all their tools together and win.
