UFC 132: Jon Fitch Injured; Rematch with BJ Penn Likely to Be Postponed

Dale De SouzaMar 30, 2011

Looks like we'll have to wait to see "The Prodigy" BJ Penn face Jon Fitch in what was supposed to be their UFC 127 rematch.

The Welterweight bout was one of the first four bouts announced for the July 2nd pay-per-view and was thought to be at least a co-headliner, if not a headliner, for the card that will be broadcast live from the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

However, MMA Junkie reports that the score will likely have to be settled at a later date, as an undisclosed injury has disabled Fitch from competition with his one time foe.

As many will recall, the UFC 127 encounter between Fitch and Penn headlined an action-packed night of fights in Australia on Saturday, February 27th, 2011. In what shocked many in the MMA World, Penn took Fitch down multiple times and took control in portions of the fight, particularly in the first round.

The second and third rounds were more in Fitch's favor, and the classic "meat-grinder" style of Fitch showed as he started landing takedown after takedown and controlling BJ on the ground after seemingly being taken aback by the takedown defense shown by BJ during the first round.

Despite what appeared to be a 29-28 fight for Fitch, the fight was ruled a majority draw with only one judge seeing the fight for Fitch.

There is no word on whether or not a replacement will be found for Fitch, but at the time of this article, BJ Penn was still expected to be in the co-headliner of the Independence Day Weekend event that officially got itself a headliner last week, when it was announced that UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz would get the bout that everyone has been waiting to see: A rematch of his WEC 26 encounter with "The California Kid" Urijah Faber, who is coming off of a hard-fought win over Eddie Wineland almost two weeks ago at UFC 128.

Either way, MMA fans can rest assured that they will get their share of fireworks early come Independence Day weekend.
