UFC Champion Cain Velasquez Video: 'It Would Be Great' To Fight Jon Jones
Let the rumors begin of a potential UFC superfight between heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
In a short video from The MMA Digest, Velasquez gave an injury update as well and also discussed a possible fight between himself and Jones.
“Within three weeks, [the doctor will] clear me to do some kind of light training,” Velasquez explained.
Velasquez has been out since his October 2010 victory over Brock Lesnar at UFC 121, when he became the heavyweight champion.
It was later announced after the fight that Velasquez had suffered a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder, which would require surgery. He underwent the surgery and is expected to be out until around fall of this year.
“The most extensive thing that the doctor has me doing is that I had to do light curls with the right arm,” Cain said. “But that’s pretty much it. I really can’t do anything.”
The winner of the Brock Lesnar vs. Junior Dos Santos fight at UFC 131 is expected to get his shot at the champion later this year. After that fight, though, the door may be wide open as few heavyweights have put themselves in obvious title contention in recent months.
One option could be a fight between Velasquez and newly-crowned UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Though Jones has made the 205-pound weight limit at light heavyweight, there have been concerns that the 23-year-old could consider a move up to heavyweight as his body continues to develop.
Velasquez discussed the possibility of a future fight against Jones.
“It would be great, man, I think he’s a really talented fighter,” he acknowledged. “He’s impressive to watch, definitely.”
But the champion is focused on getting himself back in the cage before he starts looking at opponents for down the road.
Right now, my focus is about getting 100 percent for myself,” he expressed. “As far as fighting right now, it's just like...it just seems so, so far away cause I'm trying just to get in the gym and trying to train. But he's talented. He looks good in all his fights, and he's going to be tough to beat.”
Certainly nothing is set in stone regarding this potentially huge fight, but the possibility is there.
For now, though, we wait to see when the UFC heavyweight champion will be healthy enough to get back in the cage.
