Formula One: Brawn, Mercedes, Schumacher, Vettel, Webber and the Australian GP

Barry RosenbergMar 30, 2011

Ross Brawn blames his Mercedes miseries on poor setups of both cars. Struggling with inconsistency in their cars, Rosberg was able to qualify only in seventh place, while Schumacher was unable to make it into Q3. The cars had performed well in preseason testing at Barcelona, but the set up turned out to be all wrong for Albert Park.

Brawn is adamant that their current car is a good foundation, and they will develop it into winning form. The Mercedes mechanics are dealing with the inconsistency diligently and will solve the problem as they add upgrades.

Sauber has decided against an appeal of the disqualification of Kobayashi and Perez from the finishing order of the Australian Grand Prix. While he acknowledged the deviation from the regulations, technical director James Key is certain the few millimetres that led to the disqualification did not give his cars a competitive advantage. It is unfortunate that the Sauber team has lost the championship points, but the season ahead looks good for both cars and drivers based on their fine performances in Melbourne.

Mark Webber and his Red Bull team are delving into the problems at the Australian Grand Prix that enabled his teammate, 2010 champion Vettel, to outstrip his lap time by up to a full second. The car is to be stripped to the bone for a thorough inspection to find the inequities that caused Webber's disappointing result.

Webber was disappointed in the minimal advantage gained by the DRS movable rear wing. He acknowledged that he was able to make small gains on leading competitors, but insufficient aid to enable a pass.
