2011 NFL Draft: Odds Da'Quan Bowers Will Wind Up With Each Team
The best DE in the draft, Da'Quan Bowers led the nation with 15.5 sacks in 2010.
In a defense-heavy draft, being the top DE and a potential top-five overall pick, you know Bowers has a lot to offer.
For the teams that need a dominant pass rusher, Da'Quan could certainly help there.
However, his abilities would also assist the rushing defense as his pass rushing skills could force an offense into running the ball more.
Thus, causing teams to become one-dimensional and slowing them down.
Therefore, with all this said, check out the odds for Bowers to end up with these 10 potential teams.
Denver Broncos
1 of 10
2010 DEFENSIVE RANKS AND STATS
RUSHING: 31st (154.6 yards)
PASSING: 25th (236.2 yards)
TOTAL: 32nd (390.8 yards)
With their highest draft pick in team history, the Denver Broncos defense needs some serious work done.
The training camp injury to OLB Elvis Dumervil was tragic, and Denver finished last in the NFL with only 23 sacks on the year.
Well, with a healthy Dumervil paired with Bowers on opposite sides, the Broncos could go from worst to first in sacks.
It would help the pass defense, and force the offense to run.
Thus, an improvement for the Bronco D.
ODDS: 1 in 3
Buffalo Bills
2 of 10
2010 DEFENSIVE RANKS AND STATS
RUSHING: 32nd (169.6 yards)
PASSING: 3rd (192 yards)
TOTAL: 24th (361.6 yards)
For as great as the Bills were in pass defense, you would think that would have helped the rush D.
But, 'twas not the case and Buffalo couldn't stop anyone on the ground.
And, as great as they were in pass D, they still only managed 27 sacks on the year.
With Bowers, not only would that increase, but it would allow them to use some corner and/or safety blitzes.
Then, the Buffalo defense would really become more of a full unit.
ODDS: 1 in 6
Cincinnati Bengals
3 of 10
2010 DEFENSIVE RANKS AND STATS
RUSHING: 19th (115.2 yards)
PASSING: 14th (216.8 yards)
TOTAL: 15th (332 yards)
With an "okay" at best defense, Cincinnati needs to get with the AFC North program.
By that, I mean defense. Even the Browns have some solid defensive players that are well known.
Therefore, if the Bengals can add a guy like Bowers to compliment Carlos Dunlap (9.5 sacks in 12 games), then they can improve on their 27 total sacks as well.
ODDS: 1 in 8
Arizona Cardinals
4 of 10
2010 DEFENSIVE RANKS AND STATS
RUSHING: 30th (145.2 yards)
PASSING: 23rd (228.4 yards)
TOTAL: 29th (373.6 yards)
What the Cardinals need is some depth along the defensive line.
The two starting DEs (Darnell Dockett and Calais Campbell) combined for 11 sacks, but didn't help much anywhere else.
Adding Bowers would not only make them more dynamic on defense, but add some much needed depth.
They could switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 front, and even mix in some 1-5-5 or 2-4-5 looks.
If the Cardinals can become more versatile on defense, the NFC West will get interesting real fast.
ODDS: 1 in 10
San Francisco 49ers
5 of 10
2010 DEFENSIVE RANKS AND STATS
RUSHING: 6th (96.7 yards)
PASSING: 24th (231.1 yards)
TOTAL: 13th (327.8 yards)
Despite having a sweet run defense last season, the 'Niners still have the seventh overall pick.
Now, with Nate Clements and Shawn Spencer as the CBs, the pass D has potential.
Add in the 8.5 sacks from DE Justin Smith, and San Fran has a decent defense.
Drafting Da'Quan Bowers, however, would put him opposite of Smith and the 49ers could potentially have the best pass rushing combo in the league.
That would be scary for the NFC West.
ODDS: 1 in 16
Jacksonville Jaguars
6 of 10
2010 DEFENSIVE RANKS AND STATS
RUSHING: 22nd (121.6 yards)
PASSING: 28th (250.2 yards)
TOTAL: 28th (371.8 yards)
With as much depth as the Jags' have on the defensive line, you would think they would have more sacks and a better rush D ranking.
They finished 31st in the NFL with only 26 sacks, and the team leader was Jeremy Mincey with only five.
That said, if Bowers falls to the Jags' (or they make a deal for him), the defense will definitely see a change for the better.
ODDS: 1 in 32
New England Patriots
7 of 10
2010 DEFENSIVE RANKS AND STATS
RUSHING: 11th (108 yards)
PASSING: 30th (258.5 yards)
TOTAL: 25th (366.5 yards)
With such an old defensive line and a young secondary, the Patriots defensive rankings could flip-flop in a few years.
Therefore, if coach Belichick can get some Da'Quan Bowers-like youth in the trenches, then New England will be feared even more on defense.
Chances are Bowers won't drop this far, but with the Pats' two first round draft picks, don't be surprised if they use both to trade up.
ODDS: 1 in 36
San Diego Chargers
8 of 10
2010 DEFENSIVE RANKS AND STATS
RUSHING: 4th (93.8 yards)
PASSING: 1st (177.8 yards)
TOTAL: 1st (271.6 yards)
This is the best defense on paper in the NFL.
However, with the loss of Shawn Merriman to Buffalo (even though he's been injured as of recent), there's a pass rusher opening in San Diego.
One side is owned by Shaun Phillips, and the other is up for grabs.
The problem?
The DEs for the Chargers under-performed as all four only totaled six sacks and 78 tackles.
It's a slim chance for Bowers to end up in San Diego, but he definitely could help the D stay atop the league.
ODDS: 1 in 42
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
9 of 10
2010 DEFENSIVE RANKS AND STATS
RUSHING: 28th (131.7 yards)
PASSING: 7th (201 yards)
TOTAL: 17th (332.7 yards)
The Bucs' proved a lot of skeptics wrong last season just by being in the playoff race.
They have higher expectations for 2011 (as they should), so watch for them come fall (if there's a football season).
That said, they ranked tied with Jacksonville for 31st in the league with only 26 sacks in 2010.
The odds are slim, but Bowers would be a great asset to Tampa Bay.
If they make a move to get him, don't be shocked.
ODDS: 1 in 50
New Orleans Saints
10 of 10
2010 DEFENSIVE RANKS AND STATS
RUSHING: 16th (112.3 yards)
PASSING: 4th (193.9 yards)
TOTAL: 4th (306.2 yards)
For as solid as the Saints have been on defense, it tends to be overlooked by their offense.
That said, New Orleans could use Da'Quan Bowers in creating an even better pass rush to allow the secondary to pick off more balls.
Darren Sharper would approve.
Also, the Saints only amassed 33 sacks on the year, so getting to the QB needs to improve.
