NFL Draft 2011: New England Patriots to Work Out South Florida's Terrell McClain

Tony SantorsaMar 27, 2011

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was present at the University of South Florida's pro day last week. Belichick reportedly showed some interest in defensive lineman Terrell McClain—enough interest to schedule a private workout with the 6'2",  297-pounder.

The Patriots have scheduled a private workout with McClain sometime next week. What can he bring to the table from the Patriots' point of view?

From a defensive lineman standpoint, McClain is extremely quick for his position. McClain is very explosive off of the ball and can get to the ball in a hurry.

McClain has an easy time getting off of blocks and can be a struggle to move, so he will fit nicely in a gap-control defense.

During his senior year at USF, McClain was named to the All-Big East team. Over McClain's final two seasons as a Bull, he started in 24 games and recorded 7.5 sacks. For his total career tackles, he finished with an impressive 89.

Weaknesses

One of McClain's major weaknesses is that he plays high and can be taken out of a play easily. He needs to improve on his technique and not just rely on pure talent.

McClain is a well-rounded player and doesn't really stand out in any area for a defensive lineman.

Conclusion

Belichick could definitely take a shot at McClain in one of the mid- to later rounds of the 2011 draft.

McClain could be a nice role player during his rookie season and has the skills and work ethic to develop into an NFL starter.

As he isn't really on any team's radar, McClain could be a "diamond in the rough" kind of player.
