2011 NFL Mock Draft: Mocking All 7 Rounds with Compensatory Picks

Matt MillerJun 1, 2018

With a little more than four weeks to go before the 2011 NFL Draft, it's time to get serious about mock drafts, player rankings and team needs. Not that we weren't eating, sleeping and breathing NFL draft info already.

The draft order for the 2011 NFL Draft is all set with the release of compensatory picks late Friday afternoon. Who's going where, and which needs will your favorite team be looking to fill?

We have the answers for you with our seven-round mock draft. Every pick of every round is predicted for your reading pleasure.

One quick note: This mock draft reflects what we think NFL teams will do and does not show which picks we would make should every NFL team hand their front office over to us.

Matt Miller is Bleacher Report's resident NFL draft guru. You can follow Matt on Twitter @nfldraftscout and find his football scouting work at www.newerascouting.com.

1. Carolina Panthers

Cam Newton, Quarterback, Auburn

"And with the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers select..."

How that sentence ends is on everyone's mind right now. The Panthers have tons of needs on both sides of the ball.

New head coach Ron Rivera has said that 2010 second-round pick Jimmy Clausen is not guaranteed the starting spot at quarterback next fall, leaving open the possibility that the Panthers could draft a quarterback first overall.

The team has definite needs at almost every position, making this pick an educated guess at this point in the process. With so many needs, the Panthers can truly sit back and draft the player rated highest on their draft board.

There is also a great chance the Panthers start shopping this pick if and when a new CBA is signed.

In the end, we believe this pick will be Cam Newton whether the Panthers still hold the pick or not. Not necessarily because this is the pick we would make—it's not. Newton is ranked as our No. 19 player overall.

With so many needs this offseason and no pick in the second round, we fully expect Carolina to put the No. 1 overall pick up for a trade.

2. Denver Broncos

Marcell Dareus, Defensive Tackle, Alabama

The Broncos are making a move back to the 4-3 defense under John Fox this year, leaving a big question mark at defensive tackle. The team moved last week to re-sign cornerback Champ Bailey, temporarily filling a need at cornerback.

This leaves Denver in position to draft Dareus, who will play next to Pro Bowler Elvis Dumervil in the four-man front.

This gives Denver a viable defensive line to build around and also will help pressure the quarterback and shorten the amount of time their patchwork secondary has to cover the defensive backfield.

Dareus is quickly shooting up draft boards and moving ahead of SEC rival Nick Fairley of Auburn. As the draft nears, it is becoming more likely that Dareus will be the first defensive tackle off the board.

3. Buffalo Bills

Von Miller, Outside Linebacker, Texas A&M

Almost every mock draft we see has the Bills drafting a quarterback here. Why?

We believe in Ryan Fitzpatrick, especially if you give him an improved left tackle and a defense that can stop the run.

We also believe in Von Miller.

Miller is the draft's most explosive player. In the Bills' 3-4 scheme, he will team up with Shawne Merriman to give the Bills a fierce outside pass rush.

To compete in the AFC East, the Bills must be able to stop Tom Brady and Mark Sanchez. This is step one on their plan to take back the AFC.

Da'Quan Bowers, Defensive End, Clemson

If Bowers is healthy, he ranks as the top pure defensive end in this class. Which is exactly what the Bengals need.

Bowers will line up opposite Carlos Dunlap to terrorize quarterbacks in the AFC North.

The Bengals would love to find a quarterback here, but we believe they will not be willing to draft a quarterback this high, choosing instead to look at the second-tier players later in the draft.

5. Arizona Cardinals

Blaine Gabbert, Quarterback, Missouri

We have reason to believe the Cardinals would love to draft Von Miller, as would most teams in the top 10. The Cardinals will have to settle for a franchise quarterback in Missouri's Blaine Gabbert.

Gabbert is the No. 1 quarterback on many draftnik boards. Many feel he is the safer pick between him and Cam Newton. We agree with that statement.

Gabbert's mobility, accuracy and underrated arm strength will be a welcome addition to the Arizona offense.

Somewhere, Larry Fitzgerald is smiling.

6. Cleveland Browns

Julio Jones, Wide Receiver, Alabama

Surprised to not see A.J. Green here? After last week's mock, we went back to the drawing board and took at look at which player better fits the Browns' West Coast offense under Pat Shurmur. The answer is Jones.

The Browns are facing an offseason in which they need to add targets for Colt McCoy and rebuild their defense while changing from a 3-4 to a 4-3 system. Oh, and they must replace Shaun Rogers after releasing him in a salary-cap move.

As Colt McCoy matures and becomes the Browns' franchise quarterback, he will need receivers to grow with him. Cleveland could pull the trigger as early as Round 1 on a No. 1 receiver for McCoy.

7. San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers want to see Von Miller here, and may even consider Robert Quinn to play outside linebacker. However, Trent Baalke and Jim Harbaugh simply cannot pass on the talent of Patrick Peterson.

The team has a giant need at quarterback but they do not seem to love Blaine Gabbert or Cam Newton, the only two passers worthy of a top-10 pick.

Peterson allows San Francisco the freedom to move Nate Clements to safety, keep him at left cornerback or even cut him in a salary-cap move.

Peterson is a lock-down corner who can have an immediate impact for the 49ers.

8. Tennessee Titans

A.J. Green, Wide Receiver, Georgia

Call this the best player available, or call it rebuilding your passing game around one of the best college receivers we've ever seen.

Until Kenny Britt can stay out of trouble, he'll be a risky option as the Titans' No. 1 receiver. Britt may also be better as a No. 2 receiver, allowing the game-changing Green to shine.

Yes, Tennessee needs a quarterback. Badly. Unfortunately for them there are no quarterbacks worth drafting here, unless they reach for Jake Locker or Ryan Mallett.

Trading back is an option here, as is trying to acquire Kevin Kolb from Philadelphia.

9. Dallas Cowboys

ARLINGTON, TX - DECEMBER 04: Wide receiver Cameron Kenney #6 of the Oklahoma Sooners runs the ball against Prince Amukamara #21 of the Nebraska Cornhuskers during the Big 12 Championship at Cowboys Stadium on December 4, 2010 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo

Prince Amukamara, Cornerback, Nebraska

Von Miller may be begging to play in Dallas, but there is no way he's still on the board when pick No. 9 comes around.

New defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will implement an aggressive, pressure-based scheme that asks the cornerbacks to play on an island.

While this results in productive cornerbacks, it also requires a special talent at the position. Many feel Terence Newman will have to move to safety, or another team.

Amukamara was rated as the No. 1 player in the country before the 2010 season by many draft experts. His play in 2010 was shaky compared to 2009, but there is no doubt he has the talent to excel in the NFL.

Dallas has few real needs, which puts them in a great position to draft the best available player here.

10. Washington Redskins

Nick Fairley, Defensive Tackle, Auburn

Washington is another team that would love to find a quarterback here with the 10th overall pick, but it is just not very likely this year.

With no picks in Rounds 3 and 4 due to trades, Washington must strike now to add the most talented players available at virtually any position.

Nick Fairley is the highest rated player left on our board and fills a need as a replacement for Albert Haynesworth, who should be traded or cut this offseason.

Fairley has the talent to be drafted No. 1 overall but has taken a surprising fall on most draft boards this spring.

11. Houston Texans

Robert Quinn, Outside Linebacker, North Carolina

Von Miller may be the No. 1 rated outside linebacker in this draft, but Robert Quinn is not far behind him.

Quinn's ability to rush the passer is overlooked due to the fact that he missed the 2010 season. Don't sleep on him, though.

Quinn's 2009 film shows a devilish pass rusher with the speed, agility and hip flexibility to dominate off the edge.

12. Minnesota Vikings

Jake Locker, Quarterback, Washington

A comment we are sure to receive from our dedicated readers is that Jake Locker is a reach in the first round. It's hard to argue with that.

In a normal year with free agency before the draft, we doubt Locker would be taken in the top 20 picks. In the surreal offseason of 2011, it makes sense for Minnesota to lock up their quarterback of the future at No. 12, even if it is a reach.

We have heard over the years that unless you have a franchise quarterback on your roster, it is never too early to draft a player you believe in at the position. That statement rings true for Minnesota.

13. Detroit Lions

Tyron Smith, Offensive Tackle, USC

Jeff Backus turns 34 this season. Matthew Stafford's two seasons in the NFL have ended with injuries. Offensive tackle is a need here.

Lions fans will tell you they need to focus on defense in Round 1, but we disagree. They do need to add a cornerback and outside linebacker, but this can be done later on.

Grabbing a franchise left tackle must take precedence in a draft loaded with talent in Rounds 2 and 3.

Smith has rare athletic ability for the position, and in fact, reminds us a lot of Denver Broncos Pro Bowler Ryan Clady.

The Lions may have gotten lucky here at No. 13.

14. St. Louis Rams

Ryan Kerrigan, Defensive End, Purdue

Kerrigan's stock is rising lately with a strong showing at the NFL combine and his pro day. Kerrigan alone was the reason 23 teams attended the Purdue pro day, and he did not disappoint.

St. Louis needs a wide receiver and might also like to see an outside linebacker here, but they will be ecstatic with Kerrigan coming off the edge opposite Chris Long.

15. Miami Dolphins

Mark Ingram, Running Back, Alabama

Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams will both enter free agency this offseason. The Dolphins are not expected to bring both back and could ultimately choose to start fresh at the position and let both leave. Whichever they decide, running back figures to be a key need for Miami in the draft.

We firmly believe Miami should and will trade this pick. With no second-round pick, they could trade back, pick up an extra selection in Round 2 and still grab a running back.

If you read our mock drafts each week, you may have noticed a back-and-forth here between Ingram and Illinois running back Mikel Leshoure. In the end, this will be a pick of preference by the Miami personnel department.

Our preference is Leshoure, but Ingram's pedigree and ties to the Dolphins will be hard to overlook when the Dolphins are on the clock.

16. Jacksonville Jaguars

16 of 69

Cameron Jordan, Defensive End, California

Cameron Jordan is talented enough to be drafted top five. In fact, he was in our two-round mock last week. Jordan's stock is somewhat tied to Da'Quan Bowers. If Bowers knee does not check out, Jordan will see his stock rise.

Aaron Kampman can be a dominating pass rusher, but for the second straight year, he tore an ACL and had to have surgery. His long-term value has to be in question.

This makes adding a defensive end in the first round all the more important for Jacksonville. By finding Jordan on the board here at No. 16, Jacksonville has the steal of the draft.

17. New England Patriots from Oakland Raiders

17 of 69

J.J. Watt, Defensive End, Wisconsin

We have previously slotted the Patriots to draft an offensive tackle here, with the belief that they will move to replace Matt Light with their first pick in the draft. It is also worth noting that we firmly believe the Patriots will consider trying to trade this pick.

Should the Patriots hold on to pick No. 17, they will be faced with many options, chief of which is a chance to draft an outside linebacker who can rush the passer. As good as the Patriots defense is, they are weak on the edge and have not done an effective job rushing the passer as of late.

Watt is the best of the many 3-4 defensive ends in this draft. He is recently receiving notice as a potential top-10 pick.

18. San Diego Chargers

Justin Houston, Outside Linebacker, Georgia

The Chargers have many needs they could address here. They want to get better at outside linebacker, replace four free agents at inside linebacker, add a young defensive end and potentially replace Vincent Jackson at wide receiver.

Thankfully, the Chargers have three selections in the top two rounds.

Houston's stock is skyrocketing after a stellar pro day workout. He could emerge as the second-best outside linebacker, behind only Von Miller.

19. New York Giants

Gabe Carimi, Offensive Tackle, Wisconsin

Injuries decimated the Giants offensive line this year, but this also exposed weaknesses and areas of need. No position needs more attention than offensive tackle.

Building depth at tackle is a need, but the Giants can also look for young players who can eventually start.

Carimi is slightly underrated by NFL analysts and TV scouts, but having seen him first-hand numerous times, it is hard to not be impressed with Carimi's ability on the blind side.

He is a dominant force in the run game and he has the tools to become an elite pass protector.

Doubt Carimi as a left tackle? Look at his stats against the best defensive ends in the Big 10.

vs. Adrian Clayborn (Iowa): 1 solo tackle, 1 sack

vs. Ryan Kerrigan (Purdue): 2 solo tackles

vs. Cameron Heyward (Ohio State): 2 solo tackles

Adrian Clayborn, Defensive End, Iowa

At one point this year, we had Adrian Clayborn rated as our No. 1 overall player. That was until he decided to play poorly down the stretch and cause many to question his work ethic and character. A dominant end in 2009, Clayborn was average in 2010.

When watching Clayborn on film, you can walk away amazed or disappointed. We believe teams will look hard enough at his 2009 film to be thoroughly impressed.

If you are running a 4-3 defense, you have to consider Clayborn among the best defensive ends in the class.

Clayborn has a chance to redeem himself with a strong pre-draft workout, causing teams with a need for an outside pass rush to take a look at him late in the first round.

21. Kansas City Chiefs

21 of 69

Phil Taylor, Defensive Tackle, Baylor

The popular mock draft choice for Kansas City is an outside linebacker, or maybe even a wide receiver. We're convinced the Chiefs will wait for both.

Opposite Tamba Hali, the Chiefs need an outside linebacker who can drop into coverage. None of the linebackers available can do this, except maybe Akeem Ayers, who would be a reach here.

At wide receiver, Kansas City would be reaching to draft any of the available guys.

Taylor, on the other hand, is a safe pick. Scott Pioli helped build the New England Patriots defense and knows how important a big, strong nose tackle is.

22. Indianapolis Colts

Anthony Castonzo, Offensive Tackle, Boston College

Peyton Manning had to feel a little human this season after being beaten into the turf by the Chargers and then the Cowboys.

Even in the playoffs, Manning looked rushed, rattled and scared in the pocket. We can hardly blame him after looking at how terrible the Colts offensive line was this year.

Castonzo is an elite athlete for a left tackle, a must in the Colts' zone-blocking scheme. He has long arms, a big frame and the footwork to get to the second level and pull on screens and stretch plays.

Castonzo is rated by almost all draft experts as a late first-round pick. He is a solid tackle with good athleticism, great size and excellent length. He shows ability to play in the NFL as a rookie.

23. Philadelphia Eagles

Brandon Harris, Cornerback, Miami (Fla.)

Ellis Hobbs, the team's No. 2 corner, has retired due to injuries. The end of Round 1 would be a smart place to find a future starter at cornerback, leaving Round 2 for the need at guard or defensive tackle.

Reid tends to like aggressive corners who attack the ball. Brandon Harris of Miami fits the Eagles' scheme very well.

The Eagles like physical cornerbacks who can face the receiver and make plays on the ball. Harris not only fits this mold, he has the size to run with the NFL's biggest receivers.

Harris' name is shooting up draft boards lately. He is a lock to hear his name called in Round 1.

24. New Orleans Saints

Aldon Smith, Defensive End, Missouri

Smith is normally projected as an outside linebacker for a 3-4 scheme, but we love his ability as a pure pass rusher from a 4-3 defensive end position.

Smith has experience with his hand in the dirt, not dropping back into coverage.

Given the task of attacking the quarterback every down, he could excel. Playing next to big tackles Shaun Rogers and Sedrick Ellis will not hurt, either.

25. Seattle Seahawks

Nate Solder, Offensive Tackle, Colorado

Russell Okung's rookie season has been up and down due to injury, but he looks like the long-term answer at left tackle.

Right tackle is more of a question mark with Sean Locklear. He will be a free agent and could leave for more money and a guaranteed starting job.

Tackle may not be the Seahawks' primary need heading in to the offseason, but the team cannot pass on grabbing a franchise right tackle late in Round 1.

Solder will team with Russell Okung to give the Seahawks a dynamic one-two punch at left and right tackle.

26. Baltimore Ravens

Jimmy Smith, Cornerback, Colorado

The Ravens have one of the slowest receiving crews in the NFL and would jump at the chance to add a burner to play opposite Anquan Boldin, but no player on the board is worth a late first-round pick.

Smith has the talent of a top-15 pick, but the attitude of a late-rounder. Like so many players before him Smith has let his mouth hurt his draft stock in the months leading up to the draft.

A strong enough locker room can control Smith. We figure Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Haloti Ngata, Terrell Suggs and Anquan Boldin will keep him in check.

Cameron Heyward, Defensive End, Ohio State

Why would Atlanta draft a defensive end here instead of a wide receiver or tight end?

Need.

John Abraham had a great season in 2010, but he is only going to last another year or two at a high level.

Kroy Biermann has been good, but he is a situational player at best. Neither of the aforementioned ends offer help in stopping the run.

Heyward is a complete defensive end. Turn on film of the Ohio State vs. Arkansas game and you will see why some had Heyward's name listed as the No. 1 overall player before the season began.

Brooks Reed, Outside Linebacker, Arizona

The NFL is a copycat league. It always has been.

In the 2009 NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers selected defensive lineman B.J. Raji and then picked up outside linebacker Clay Matthews later in Round 1. The two players eventually anchored a Packers defense that won the Super Bowl in 2010.

The Patriots picked up the draft's best 3-4 defensive end (J.J. Watt) earlier in Round 1. Now is their chance to draft a Clay Matthews clone in Brooks Reed.

Since we are talking about the New England Patriots, there is a great chance Bill Belichick will have traded this pick before they are able to use it.

Should they hold on to the choice, New England will be in position to add a talented player at a position of immediate need.

Derek Sherrod, Offensive Tackle, Mississippi State

The Bears shocked everyone by making a run to the NFC Championship Game this past season. Had Jay Cutler not gone down to injury, the Bears had a chance to surprise people by appearing in the Super Bowl.

What does Chicago need to do to have a legitimate chance to play for the 2011 NFL championship? Adding a left tackle to protect Cutler and wide receivers who can get open is key to this offseason.

Sherrod is a left tackle by trade but has the strength to play on the right side in a zone-blocking system or West Coast offense. He is an underrated run blocker, and in pass protection, he is NFL-ready.

Akeem Ayers, Outside Linebacker, UCLA

The New York Jets have an offseason plan to re-sign high priority free agents Antonio Cromartie, Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards.

If they can get these three key players back under contract, their draft focus can shift to adding a young pass rusher at outside linebacker and replacing veterans on the offensive and defensive lines.

Akeem Ayers will have one mission for the New York Jets: piss off Tom Brady.

The Jets have proven they can beat New England, now they need to take the division from them. Ayers' ability as a pass rusher and cover man will take them one step closer.

Mike Pouncey, Offensive Guard, Florida

The Steelers were so close to another Super Bowl ring—and we believe they have the talent to be back in the big game next season.

The team is loaded at wide receiver, running back and on defense. They also have a top-five quarterback and a young coach who are excellent leaders.

Where Pittsburgh is obviously lacking is in the offensive line and the secondary. With pick No. 31, the Steelers are in a great position to draft the best available cornerback or offensive lineman.

In this case, the best available player happens to be the younger brother of 2010 rookie and Pro Bowl selection Maurkice Pouncey.

Putting the two Pounceys side-by-side will be an automatic improvement to the Steelers' pass protection.

32. Green Bay Packers

32 of 69

Muhammad Wilkerson, Defensive End, Temple

The Temple Owls do not put many players in the first round of the NFL draft. Muhammad Wilkerson is a rare talent.

The Packers have a few needs on the roster coming off their Super Bowl win. One need is at defensive end.

Cullen Jenkins is a free agent. Johnny Jolly was arrested last week. Mike Neal is unproven, but will have a chance to start in 2011.

Wilkerson and Neal will make up two-thirds of the Packers front line of the future, teaming with future Pro Bowler B.J. Raji at nose tackle.

33. New England Patriots from Carolina Panthers

33 of 69

Danny Watkins, Offensive Lineman, Baylor

The Patriots know the value of the first pick on day two of the draft and will likely trade this selection for a 2012 first-rounder.

Bill Belichick has not historically drafted running backs high, especially after missing on Laurence Maroney. Danny Woodhead and BenJarvus Green-Ellis did a fine job, leading us to believe running back will be addressed later on.

Watkins fills two potential needs. He can step in and play right guard or right tackle immediately.

At right tackle, Watkins would allow Sebastian Vollmer to play left tackle in replacement of Matt Light. There is also the matter of replacing a retired Stephen Neal at right guard to address.

Watkins carries great value for the Patriots here.

34. Buffalo Bills

34 of 69

Corey Liuget, Defensive End, Illinois

Corey Liuget has the speed to pressure and chase on the edge, but the size and strength to sit down against the run. He is also versatile enough to play end in a 3-4 or tackle in a 4-3.

The Bills have a lot of needs left to address and could look at offensive tackle, wide receiver or even quarterback here.

35. Cincinnati Bengals

Christian Ponder, Quarterback, Florida State

In 1992, franchise quarterback Boomer Esiason asked Bengals owner Mike Brown to trade him. Brown declined and instead drafted David (not Mike) Klinger in the first round of the '93 NFL draft to replace Esiason, who was then traded to the New York Jets one full year after requesting a trade.

Why is this relevant? This offseason franchise quarterback Carson Palmer requested a trade, which Brown denied. See a pattern?

Before the 2010 season began, many saw Ponder as a potential No. 1 overall pick. Injuries and inconsistent play hurt his stock, but Ponder is enjoying a comeback during pre-draft workouts.

First, he was MVP of the Senior Bowl, followed by a very strong performance during quarterback sessions during the scouting combine.

It would not surprise us at all to see a team, perhaps even Cincinnati, trade back into the end of Round 1 to draft Ponder.

Aaron Williams, Cornerback, Texas

Denver was able re-sign future Hall of Fame cornerback Champ Bailey before the lockout began. While this move brings good PR at a time when NFL news has not been optimistic, it is but a Band-Aid on the roster needs of the Broncos.

Bailey will turn 33 this summer and has regressed in recent years. He is still a good cornerback, but he is far from his days as an elite "shutdown" cornerback.

Williams will not be able to fill the hole left when Bailey does eventually retire, but he is a promising cornerback with great size and very good natural instincts. He would have a strong chance to start as a rookie at cornerback or free safety.

Jabaal Sheard, Defensive End, Pittsburgh

As much as they need a defensive end to open up the outside pass rush, the Browns need someone who can actually rush the passer from outside.

This has been a need for Cleveland since moving to a 3-4 defense and will be an even bigger need now that they are transitioning back to a 4-3. They must make adding a speed rusher a priority in the 2011 draft.

Sheard is making a quick move up draft boards with a strong performance this offseason. We previously had him rated as a mid second-round pick but have moved him up in our latest rankings.

Martez Wilson, Inside Linebacker, Illinois

Arizona has a much bigger need for an outside linebacker but cannot pass by the talented and athletic freak that is Martez Wilson.

Arizona is still hurting from the loss of Karlos Dansby in their hybrid 3-4 defense. Ayers is very similar to Dansby in size, speed and ability. Both players can rush the passer or drop back in to coverage equally well.

Wilson has had an awesome rise up draft boards with a jaw-dropping performance at the NFL combine. Strong work in private workouts could move him into Round 1.

39. Tennessee Titans

Ryan Mallett, Quarterback, Arkansas

For all the off-field issues, Mallett is still one hell of a quarterback when given time to throw. Tennessee has an underrated offensive line and will be able to protect the less-than-mobile Mallett.

We truly believe there are a few teams where Mallett could come in and perform very well. Tennessee is one of them.

With the addition of A.J. Green in Round 1, the Titans offense has the look of a juggernaut.

Michael Roos and David Stewart can keep Mallett's jersey clean, Chris Johnson can give him relief in a strong running back and the combination of Green and Britt on the outside will allows the Titans to showcase the very strong arm of Mallett.

If you are a Titans fan, this has to excite you.

Marvin Austin, Defensive End, North Carolina

Dallas enters the offseason with only four free agents on their roster. One is starting defensive end Marcus Spears, who is not expected back.

Austin was a preseason candidate to be the No. 1 overall player on many draft boards before his season was lost after he was ruled ineligible by the NCAA.

Colin Kaepernick, Quarterback, Nevada

Donovan McNabb should be shipped out of town this summer. Rex Grossman and John Beck are free agents. Quarterback is the Redskins most pressing need.

Kaepernick is a quietly underrated quarterback in this class. Without the hype of Newton, Gabbert and Locker he will be able to come in to Washington without the pressure of a first-round pick.

Mike Shanahan loves mobile quarterbacks with big arms (John Elway, Jay Cutler, Donovan McNabb). Kaepernick fits this mold perfectly.

Ras-I Dowling, Cornerback, Virginia

The Texans hired Wade Phillips to bring his 3-4 defense to town and hopefully push the talented team into the playoffs.

To win in 2011, the Texans must start adding personnel to fit the 3-4 system as soon as possible while also fixing a league-worst pass defense.

Unfortunately, they have a need at both free and strong safety, and this draft is pretty weak at both spots.

Dowling's stock is soaring in our eyes. He's a physical cover man with the speed to turn and run, as well as the courage to help in run support.

43. Minnesota Vikings

Bruce Carter, Outside Linebacker, North Carolina

Had it not been for a torn ACL late in the 2010 season, Bruce Carter would have been a candidate for the Vikings in Round 1.

A rare athlete with excellent speed and vision, Carter will fill the hole left by Ben Leber in free agency and pair with Chad Greenway to give the Vikings a formidable linebacking crew.

Curtis Brown, Cornerback, Texas

The great Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com told me the other day that "USC and Texas players scare the hell out of me." Tom, I apologize.

In Round 1, the Lions selected USC tackle Tyron Smith. Here we have them grabbing a Longhorn.

Unlike other teams picking in the middle of the first round, Detroit has many identifiable needs they must address. Near the top of that list is the cornerback position.

Brown was the more impressive player at the Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine when compared to his teammate Aaron Williams, who was drafted just a few spots ahead of Brown.

45. San Francisco 49ers

Andy Dalton, Quarterback, TCU

The 49ers added a key to the defense in Round 1, but now, they must focus on finding the perfect quarterback for Jim Harbaugh's West Coast offense.

Dalton is not a perfect quarterback, and for many systems, he would be a bad selection. However, in San Francisco, Harbaugh will be running a system based on timing and accuracy, Dalton's two biggest assets.

It is worth noting that new head coach Jim Harbaugh did not attend Cam Newton or Ryan Mallett's pro day workouts but did travel to see Dalton work out in person.

Kyle Rudolph, Tight End, Notre Dame

Using the pick they received in exchange for wide receiver Brandon Marshall, the Broncos find a great threat for quarterbacks Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow.

Rudolph could be drafted in the first round based on pure talent, but two seasons of injuries could push him into the middle of Round 2. Wherever he is drafted, it is all but certain that Rudolph will be an impact player if healthy.

Randall Cobb, Wide Receiver, Kentucky

St. Louis is excited about a full season with Mark Clayton, Danny Amendola and Donnie Avery together. We think adding another outside option at receiver would be smart.

Cobb is a dynamic receiver with outstanding ability to make plays with the ball. He will also give St. Louis an upgrade as a punt returner.

Much like Eddie Royal was for Denver in Mike Shanahan's last year there, Cobb is an electric player who can contribute as a rookie.

48. Oakland Raiders

48 of 69

Benjamin Ijalana, Offensive Lineman, Villanova

The Raiders surprised everyone with a very good 2010 draft class. In 2011, they are off to a strong start with their first pick.

With Bruce Campbell expected to take over one starting spot, Ijalana could easily move in at left guard or right tackle during his rookie season.

Ijalana could start at guard or tackle for Oakland, and replacing Robert Gallery with Ijalana is an early option for the team.

Rahim Moore, Free Safety, UCLA

At some point in this draft, the Jaguars will need to add a young quarterback and at least one wide receiver, but first they must address the weak link on their roster: the secondary.

In Round 1, Jacksonville added a cover man who can lock down NFL receivers. Here, they find a center fielder to patrol the deep-thirds and create turnovers.

Moore was one of the better playmaking safeties in college football this past year.

50. San Diego Chargers

Christian Ballard, Defensive End, Iowa

Despite their record in 2010, the Chargers have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL, which makes their predictably slow start every season more puzzling.

With five of the first 96 picks, the Chargers can reload at their thin spots or use their extra picks as trade bait to secure more picks next year.

San Diego's 3-4 defense is only as good as the pressure they can place on the quarterback. The Chargers' focus for 2011 will be adding pass rushers, as well as looking to get better at inside linebacker and defensive end.

Ballard carried a first-round grade on some boards after the college football season ended. His stock has cooled some since then but he is still a great value pick in the middle of round two.

Ballard has the agility of a defensive end and the size of a defensive tackle.

Marcus Cannon, Offensive Tackle, TCU

Tampa Bay's rotation of Jeremy Trueblood and James Lee was terrible in 2010 and something the team must improve if they want to push themselves over the hump and in to the playoffs next fall.

The Bucs could go a few directions here, but finding Cannon on the board is a great surprise to them.

Mikel Leshoure, Running Back, Illinois

The Giants' offseason will be dictated by running back Ahmad Bradshaw's 2011 status with the team.

If Bradshaw leaves, the Giants will need to move immediately to replace him.

We are flat-out shocked to find Leshoure still on the board here. So many teams in the late first round and early second round do not have needs at running back to justify drafting this top 20 talent.

53. Indianapolis Colts

Stephen Paea, Defensive Tackle, Oregon State

Paea is a beast at the defensive tackle position. At only 300 pounds, he set the NFL combine record for bench press reps...with a damaged shoulder.

He'll sit out a few weeks while recovering from surgery, which could cause him to miss offseason workouts with teams before the draft.

Paea's stock may suffer because of this, but teams will wisely scoop him up if he starts to fall in Round 2.

Rodney Hudson, Offensive Guard/Center, Florida State

Hudson is, in our estimation, the best pure blocker at offensive guard in this draft class.

He lacks the size and pedigree of Mike Pouncey, but Hudson is a stone wall when it comes to blocking. The Eagles have a steal here.

55. Kansas City Chiefs

55 of 69

Torrey Smith, Wide Receiver, Maryland

Kansas City looks set at receiver with Dwayne Bowe playing well this year. Depth is a concern here, as is finding a legitimate receiver to take pressure off Bowe.

Kansas City could also benefit from adding a slot receiver to open up the downfield passing game.

Smith's draft stock is all over the place. He has freakish speed and great value, but he's also inconsistent and a little immature.

56. New Orleans Saints

56 of 69

Chris Carter, Outside Linebacker, Fresno State

The Saints found a defensive end with Aldon Smith in Round 1. Here they find an outside linebacker with great speed and instincts to line up behind Smith and to anchor the right side of the Saints defense.

Carter is not only a replacement for Scott Shanle but an upgrade at the position.

57. Seattle Seahawks

Brandon Burton, Cornerback, Utah

The Seahawks allowed opposing quarterbacks to rack up an average rating of 89.7 against them. Changes must be made at cornerback.

Burton is a lanky cover man with very good range. He is an underrated talent who can start from Day One in the NFL.

He reminds us a lot of New England Patriots cornerback and rookie Pro Bowler Devin McCourty.

Titus Young, Wide Receiver, Boise State

Looking for a steal or sleeper Rookie of the Year pick? Remember the name Titus Young.

Young is a dynamic return man, slot receiver and runner with the ball in his hands. Young's playmaking skills will be a welcome addition to the painfully slow Ravens' receiving crew.

Leonard Hankerson, Wide Receiver, Miami (Fla.)

Roddy White emerged as one of the NFL's best receivers during the 2010 season. What is more surprising is that White is doing so well without a legitimate threat opposite him.

Michael Jenkins has been average and inconsistent at times. We do like Harry Douglas in the slot, but Atlanta could look to upgrade over Jenkins in Rounds 1 or 2.

Hankerson is wildly talented, but he is also an inconsistent player who will drop easy passes and run sloppy routes. He'll need work, but he has the skills to be a very good NFL player.

60. New England Patriots

Ryan Williams, Running Back, Virginia Tech

The Patriots have used three picks so far in this draft and added a defensive end, outside linebacker and right guard/tackle. And they still have three more picks in the next 35 selections. Which is crazy.

Williams is a steal late in the second round. He has the speed to break away from the defense and potential as a receiver.

He'll work in tandem with BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead to give New England an even scarier offense.

61. San Diego Chargers from New York Jets

Jon Baldwin, Wide Receiver, Pittsburgh

Baldwin has impressive talent, but his production has been so-so, and there are concerns about his attitude.

When placed in the Chargers locker room, he will become an immediate weapon for quarterback Philip  Rivers.

Baldwin serves two purposes: as a potential replacement for Vincent Jackson if he is traded, and as a No. 2 wide receiver on a Chargers team with a yearly need at receiver.

Greg Little, Wide Receiver, North Carolina

The Bears' defense and running game are good enough to win a Super Bowl, but they had no passing attack in 2010 due in large part to the inability of their receivers to get open and to secure easy catches.

Little will come in and immediately challenge incumbents Johnny Knox and Earl Bennett for the No. 1 receiver position.

Give Jay Cutler a solid receiver, and you will see his production soar through the roof.

63. Pittsburgh Steelers

Orlando Franklin, Offensive Tackle, Miami (Fla.)

The Steelers will be tempted to look at cornerbacks after filling their need at right guard in Round 1. Instead they focus again on the offensive line.

Pittsburgh has had a need at offensive tackle for the last five years and they have never drafted to fill the holes.

Instead of overpaying for Band-Aid solutions through free agency, Mike Tomlin and Co. draft a versatile lineman who can play guard or tackle.

64. Green Bay Packers

DeMarco Murray, Running Back, Green Bay Packers

James Starks came on late in the year and carried the Packers running game through the playoffs and Super Bowl.

Starter Ryan Grant is scheduled to return in 2011 but could possibly be a salary cap casualty.

Murray is the ideal third-down back. He has experience as a kick returner, can play in the slot and is a valuable receiver. Not to mention, he's a pretty good running back.

1. Carolina (2-14) Drake Nevis | Defensive Tackle | LSU

- Nevis fills a hole Carolina could address as early as Round 1. He's the perfect complement on a young Panthers defensive line.

2. Cincinnati (4-12) Jordan Todman | Running Back | Connecticut

- Todman is the lightning to Cedric Benson's thunder. He's also an upgrade at receiver out of the backfield on third downs.

3. Denver (4-12) DeAndre McDaniel | Strong Safety | Clemson

- McDaniel will be groomed to take over for a potential Hall of Famer in Brian Dawkins. He can help in nickel packages and special teams as a rookie.

4. Buffalo (4-12) James Carpenter | Offensive Tackle | Alabama

- Carpenter is a left tackle by trade but has the strength to play on the right side. A decorated and experienced college player.

5. Arizona (5-11) Sam Acho | Outside Linebacker | Texas

- Sam Acho never produced as expected at Texas but has the tools to be a very solid NFL player. Acho will excel as a pass rusher without coverage responsibility.

6. Cleveland (5-11) Kenrick Ellis | Defensive Tackle | Hampton

- Cleveland cut Shaun Rogers and will need a replacement for him in the zero-technique position for their 4-3 defense. Ellis has a similar body type and much smaller salary.

7. Dallas (6-10) Quinton Carter | Free Safety | Oklahoma

- Dallas will use the 2011 Draft to remake a secondary that was victimized last year. Carter has range to cover deep thirds but also is good in run support.

8. New Orleans—from Washington (6-10) Shane Vereen | Running Back | California

- Pierre Thomas has been re-signed, but Reggie Bush looks to be on his way out. Vereen is everything Reggie Bush was supposed to be, but without the drama or inflated salary cap number.

9. Houston (6-10) Robert Sands | Free Safety | West Virginia

- Houston, like Dallas, will use the middle rounds of the 2011 Draft to rebuild their secondary. Sands has excellent size and range for a free safety.

10. New England—from Minnesota (6-10) Austin Pettis | Wide Receiver | Boise State

- The rich continue to get richer as New England grabs an underrated receiver who has the size to run on the outside. Pettis has few flaws and will be NFL-ready.

11. Detroit (6-10) Dontay Moch | Outside Linebacker | Nevada

- Detroit pulls the trigger on the super-fast and super-raw Moch. An edge rusher for Nevada, Moch must learn the intricacies of the position as an NFL linebacker.

12. San Francisco (6-10) K.J. Wright | Outside Linebacker | Mississippi State

- The 49ers have filled needs at cornerback and quarterback but must move now to find an edge rusher for their 3-4 defense. Wright has the size/speed combination to get defensive coordinator Vic Fangio excited.

13. Tennessee (6-10) Allen Bailey | Defensive End | Miami (Fla.)

- Allen Bailey could go as high as the early second round. He has great athleticism but has never put the talent together and turned it into production.

14. St. Louis (7-9) Luke Stocker | Tight End | Tennessee

- The Rams continue to find sleepers in the middle of the round. Stocker will fill a key hole in the St. Louis and aid quarterback Sam Bradford in the red zone.

15. Miami (7-9) Ricky Stanzi | Quarterback | Iowa

- Miami may or may not see Chad Henne as their long-term answer at quarterback. Drafting a passer to compete with him is never a bad idea. Stanzi has the moxie to win over a divided locker room.

16. Jacksonville (8-8) Davon House | Cornerback | New Mexico State

- Jacksonville's secondary was a wreck in 2010, which is why the last two picks have been focused on improving their weakest link.

17. Oakland (8-8) Stefen Wisniewski | Center | Penn State

- Uncle Steve is the Raiders assistant offensive line coach. Little Wisniewski fills a hole at guard or center, depending on where the Raiders play second-round pick Ben Ijalana.

18. San Diego (9-7) Quan Sturdivant | Inside Linebacker | North Carolina

- The Chargers have filled almost every need on the roster so far through smart drafting. Next up is inside linebacker, where Sturdivant's speed will be a welcome addition.

19. New York Giants (10-6) Jurrell Casey | Defensive Tackle | Southern California

- The Giants focus in Round 1 was at left tackle. In Round 3, they look to the other line and find the three-technique defensive tackle to pressure the quarterback.

20. Tampa Bay (10-6) Greg Jones | Inside Linebacker | Michigan State

- Greg Jones has to remind Bucs fans of Derrick Brooks. He's undersized, quick, smart and full of heart.

21. Philadelphia (10-6) Jarvis Jenkins | Defensive Tackle | Clemson

- Philadelphia has four free agents on the defensive line and need an upgrade at defensive tackle. This pick is full of need and value.

22. Kansas City (10-6) James Brewer | Offensive Tackle | Indiana

- The Chiefs would love to upgrade over Barry Richardson at right tackle. Brewer has the talent to take over for him as a rookie.

23. Indianapolis (10-6) Jason Pinkston | Offensive Guard | Pittsburgh

- The Colts have found a left tackle and defensive tackle thus far in the draft. Round 3 hands them a right guard prospect who could have an immediate impact on a bad offensive line. Pinkston can also play right tackle.

24. New Orleans (11-5) Shareece Wright | Cornerback | Southern California

- The Saints like their starting cornerbacks, as do we. In an ever-improving NFC South, they need to add depth at cornerback to fill out their nickel and dime packages.

25. San Diego Chargers—from Seattle (7-9) Joseph Barksdale | Offensive Tackle | LSU

- The Chargers hope to re-sign Jeromy Clary, but in an uncertain offseason they have to look to the draft to find a potential replacement should they be unable to bring Clary back.

26. Baltimore (12-4) Lawrence Guy | Defensive End | Arizona State

- The Ravens keep adding smart players who can contribute as rookies. Guy is a perfect fit for the Ravens' hybrid 3-4 defense.

27. Atlanta (13-3) D.J. Williams | Tight End | Arkansas

- Tony Gonzalez's brilliant career will end soon, perhaps right after the 2011 season. Williams is an able receiver who will need a season to learn how to be an NFL blocker.

28. New England (14-2) Chimdi Chekwa | Cornerback | Ohio State

- The Patriots have filled every possible need with their five draft picks before this. What's left besides depth in the secondary? Chekwa brings size and toughness to the Patriots cornerback depth chart.

29. Chicago (11-5) Jerrell Powe | Defensive Tackle | Mississippi

- Tommie Harris was cut after a disappointing 2010 season. Powe is a Harris-clone, minus the attitude and laziness.

30. New York Jets (11-5) Jerrel Jernigan | Wide Receiver | Troy

- Jernigan is a perfect replacement for free agent Brad Smith. He can play in the slot, is a top-ranked kick returner and has upside as a game-changing ball carrier.

31. Pittsburgh (12-4) Marcus Gilchrist | Cornerback | Clemson

- Gilchrist has value as a dual-threat cornerback or free safety. Pittsburgh will love using him in coverage on inside receivers and tight ends.

32. Green Bay (10-6) Mason Foster | Outside Linebacker | Washington

- Green Bay finally makes the pick many expect early on in finding a partner for Clay Matthews at outside linebacker. Foster is a complete player who has value as a three-down linebacker.

33. Carolina (compensatory) Clint Boling | Offensive Guard | Georgia

- With the first compensatory pick handed out, Carolina finds a guard to play next to Jordan Gross and Ryan Kalil. Boling could help round out a very solid left side of the line in Carolina.
