Where Exactly Is The Jets Ground Game?

Joey CinquegranaOct 2, 2008

In the off-season the Jets acquired All Pro Guard, Alan Faneca. They also signed another good offensive lineman in Damien Woody.  That wasn't all, either. They signed one of the best blocking fullbacks of our time in Tony Richardson.

Alan Faneca has been amazing, as expected. Damien Woody has been better then what the Jets have had in the last couple of seasons, so no complaining there. Tony Richardson? Where has he been?

Yet this team still is incapable of running the ball?  Why exactly can't they run the ball? All off-season long we were hearing how great a run team this team was going to become.  Then they signed Brett Favre, and everything changed.

Who is the problem? Well, I think it's Thomas Jones. During Week 2, the Jets were on the verge of scoring against the Patriots.  They gave the ball to Thomas Jones all 3 times.  They failed to score the touchdown, instead got the field goal, and eventually lost, because they weren't able to get into the end-zone.

I know it's been said by basically every Jets fan in the world, but it's time to give Leon Washington the majority of carries over Thomas Jones.

In 2006, Leon Washington ran with basically two rookie offensive lineman, and a proven veteran in Pete Kendall.  So basically, what I am saying is nothing compared to what this team has now.

So why not give the ball to Leon Washington?  When he has the ball in his hands, he has shown he is one of the most dangerous players on the football field.

Something that may help, however, Jesse Chatman will be returning from his 4 week suspension after the Jets bye week. He has shown signs of being a great running back, and hopefully this will be the guy who will get the team into the end-zone in goal line situations.

If Thomas Jones can't run behind this offensive line, then he should just retire, because he will never be able to run behind any offensive line.
