NCAA Tournament 2011: Is Derrick Williams the Best Player in the Sweet 16?

Michael MillMar 25, 2011

Everybody is talking about BYU's Jimmer Fredette and UConn's Kemba Walker, but the best player on the court during the NCAA tournament has been Arizona's Derrick Williams.

If you don't know who Williams is, here is a statistic you may find intriguing.

This season Walker is shooting 43.3 percent, and Fredette is shooting 45.2 percent.

Williams has hit 60.2 percent of his shots this season. This includes an unbelievable 60.3 percent shooting from beyond the three-point line.

Williams does not take nearly the same amount of shots as Walker or Fredette, but when he does shoot, he rarely misses.

This was the case last night in Arizona's 93-77 victory against Duke.

Williams hit on 11 of 17 shots, including five of six from beyond the arc. The performance led to a season-high 32 points and eliminated the defending national champions from the tournament.

If it wasn't for Williams' performance in Arizona's first two tournament games, the Wildcats wouldn't even had been in the position to play Duke.

He scored only 22 points against Memphis in the first round, and 17 against Texas in the second round.

However, in each game, Williams made key plays at the end to save his team from elimination.

In the first round of the tournament, Williams made a key block with under five seconds remaining in regulation to hold off the Memphis Tigers, 77-75.

In the second round, Williams led the Wildcats to victory after the controversial timeout call by Texas. With a little under 10 seconds remaining, Williams made a shot to tie the game and went to the line on a foul call.

There he put Arizona up 70-69, which would ultimately be the final score.

The impact that Williams has had on this tournament has been substantial.

After BYU's loss to Florida, it appeared that the spotlight would be on Walker for the remainder of the tournament.

Williams will look to redirect that spotlight when the Wildcats play the Huskies on Saturday night.

The winner of the matchup will advance to the Final Four.
