Jon Jones vs. Anderson Silva: Is This the Dream Fight We Really Want?

Cody SlovenskyMar 25, 2011

Since UFC 128, the biggest talking point has become, "We want Jon Jones vs. Anderson Silva as the Superfight."

While that fight might sound all well and good, is Jones truly ready for someone like Silva?

Jones defeated Mauricio Rua in hugely impressive fashion. In many eyes, in fact, it's the greatest thing to happen in MMA ever. He is the first fighter to truly back up the hype that Zuffa gave him and appears to have a true chance at greatness.

However, before he is labeled so highly, doesn't it make sense for him to defend the title first?

Anderson Silva is the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world at the moment in most people's eyes. In his latest fight, Silva knocked Vitor Belfort out with a beautiful front kick. However, in his fight prior to that, his flaw was revealed by the heavily hated Chael Sonnen.

Anderson's takedown defense isn't the greatest, but his work off his back is.

On the other hand, no one knows what Jones' weakness is. He hasn't faced a truly elite wrestler yet and his chin hasn't been tested. After his fight with Rashad Evans, we will know how deserving he is of a Superfight.

It's hard to be sold on a fighter so early in their career. Jones is great, no doubt, but he still needs a few more fights to break him in.

The fight that truly makes sense would be Georges St-Pierre vs. Anderson Silva. That is, if St-Pierre defeats Jake Shields. If any Superfight for Jones should happen, it should be at heavyweight.

No disrespect to Jon Jones, but let's wait until he defends his belt and solidifies that he is a champion (I believe you only become a true champion after you defend your belt). There is no doubt that Jones has a bright future, but Superfights shouldn't be made until you clean out your division like Silva and St-Pierre have done.
