Sony Ericsson Open: Day 2 Matches to Watch Today
Alberto Berlocq (ARG) vs. Jack Sock (USA): The American kid who took Flushing Meadows by storm last summer is making his main draw debut for 2011. Ten years older, Argentina's Carlos Berlocq has struggled to a 2-6 start to 2011.
Florian Mayer (GER) vs. Ivo Karlovic (CRO): Karlovic is about as deadly an opponent as one could fear to face in the first round right now. Having reached the quarterfinals of Indian Wells last week, and setting a new world record for fastest serve 10 days before that. Mayer is ranked 39th in the world with a quick 11-8 start to this season, but the 27-year-old has never won a title on the ATP level.
Janko Tipsarevic (SRB) vs. Robin Haase (NED): The result of being not-quite consistent enough to crack the Top 30 means no byes and lots of tough first-round matchups for the affable Tipsarevic, who is ranked 44th in the world and is 11-7 in 2011. Haase is Tipsarevic's opposite—tall and skinny—and is ranked 63rd, standing 6-7 to date in 2011.
Ryan Harrison (USA) vs. Rainer Schuettler (GER): His fourth-round appearance at Indian Wells got Harrison plenty of attention and a 22-point bump in the rankings. He now takes on a man who debuted on tour when Harrison was all of three years old in the 34-year-old Schuettler, who has staggered out of the gate to a 1-6 mark.
WTA
Melanie Oudin (USA) vs. Daniela Hantuchova (SVK): The 19-year-old Oudin fought her way through the qualifications to get here, but she'll have a much tougher time with 30th-ranked Hantuchova. The Slovak owns a 2-0 record against the American, including a three-set win over her in Miami in 2009.
Samantha Stosur (AUS) vs. Jie Zheng (CHN): Stosur is a remarkably unimpressive 7-7 to start 2011, flaming out early at Indian Wells two weeks ago. That can be big trouble against a competitor like Zheng, even if she's only 1-4 to date. The pair have a history—they split two matchups in 2009.
Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) vs. Bethanie Mattek-Sands (USA): There's no player who relishes a matchup like this more than the competitive Mattek-Sands, off to an 8-7 start and now a consistent Top 50 singles player. Wozniacki has eyes on the back of her head considering her No. 1 ranking and fast start (19-3). She won the pair's only matchup two years ago on clay at Rome.
Shuai Peng (CHN) vs. Aravane Rezai (FRA):Talk about a tough matchup—two players ranked in the Top 32 face off on Day 2? That's the breaks for Peng, who accelerated up the rankings with her performance at Indian Wells after the Miami bracket was already locked in. She's a gaudy 23-7 on the year, while Rezai is a meager 2-4.
